LAS VEGAS — We don’t gush a lot here at LAPTOP Mag, but typing on the new Motorola Droid 4 for Verizon Wireless is pure joy. Announced here at CES and available in the coming weeks, this Android phone sports the best keyboard we’ve used on a slider. The 5-row layout features wonderfully springy feedback and edge-lit keys that are easy to see in dim conditions. Add in 4G LTE data and you have a pretty compelling work-and-play partner.

Read on for our impressions, and check out the gallery and hands-on video. The Droid 4 is equipped with a 1.2-GHz processor, 8-MP camera with 1080p video capture and 16GB of memory. This is not the Droid RAZR with a keyboard, however, because this slider has a standard 4-inch qHD screen. No Super AMOLED Plus goodness here. When viewed straight on the display it looks fine, but the LCD doesn’t offer the same wide viewing angles as the Droid RAZR.

The Droid 4 offers a lot of the RAZR’s versatility, however. You get support for mirror mode via HDMI output, as well as compatibility with Motorola’s Lapdock accessories. Both Smart Actions software (great for saving battery life) and MotoCast (for streaming content from a PC) are on board as well.

Overall, the Droid 4 really impresses where it counts. The keyboard is just that good. Stay tuned for a full review.
