Motorola Devour Reviewed: Doesn’t Eat the Droid

Last week we got a brief glimpse at the Motorola Devour at Mobile World Congress. This week, we got to review it, putting this $149 slider, the lovechild between the Droid and the Cliq, through its paces.

How does the Devour stack up? That all depends on which phones you compare it with.

The Droid, also on Verizon, costs $50 more (through Verizon, at least) and has a larger, higher-res display that’s more responsive, along with a sharper 5-MP camera with Autofocus and the ability to add multiple Gmail accounts. For Verizon customers looking for an Android phone, the Devour is only a better choice for heavy texters, since the Devour has a more comfortable keyboard and Motorola’s social networking-heavy Motoblur interface. It also has a softer look than the Droid (although the shape is the same), making it the better choice for people who have held off on buying a Droid on account of its bulky form factor.

But compared to the Cliq, a Motoblur phone with an identical 3.1-inch screen that costs $50 more (monthly data charges not withstanding), the Devour seems like a stronger phone. Sure, the Cliq has a 5-MP camera while the Devour offers a larger microSD card (8GB, not 2GB), but otherwise, the phones are so comparable in both physical design and user experience. For a Motoblur phone, then, it offers a good deal of value. As a Verizon phone competing against the Droid, not so much.
