Do Americans Really Care About MIDs?

Smart phones are getting 1.0-GHz processors, bigger screens, and PlayStation-quality graphics. Windows 7 netbooks that last 8 hours on a charge can now be had for as little as $299. So is the world really ready for a product that sits in between these two hugely successful categories?

Dell certainly thinks so, along with Archos, ICD, UMID, Viliv, and a host of other companies making mobile Internet devices, which are designed to bring the full Web to your pocket–or at least a coat pocket. (The upcoming iPad could be considered a MID, but we classify it as a tablet because it’s not as travel friendly.) The question, however, isn’t what the right mix of size, price, and capabilities are for MIDs to take off. It’s whether these tweeners will be outright ignored by the masses.
