Toy Fair 2010
Mattel Unveils Barbie’s Newest Career: Computer Engineer
February 12th, 2010 by K. T. Bradford
Our friends at Chip Chick were on hand at Mattel’s unveiling of Barbie’s newest career today as the giant toy maker kicked off ToyFair festivities. The company held an online poll to determine what Barbie’s 125th career should be, offering five choices: Environmentalist, Surgeon, Architect, News Anchor, Computer Engineer.
According to Mattel, the Girls’ choice was News Anchor, but votes for Computer Engineer “became viral amongst female engineers and other women in the tech industry,” so the company decided that career #126 would go in favor of the geeks.
The doll comes with a pink laptop (naturally), a smartphone, Bluetooth headset and chic laptop bag. No word on weather the laptop is a Mac or PC or if future accessories will include a pink spool of cat5e cable. She is an engineer, after all. She’ll be available in winter of 2010.
We’ll be covering toy fair this weekend and next week and we’ll have a chance to talk with the Barbie team about the doll and answer the question I’m sure all of you are burning to ask: what kind of laptop does Barbie use? (We’ve made some educated guesses. Vote in our poll or add your own best guess in the comments here.)
