iPhone Still Not A Netbook, But 7-9-inch iPod Touch Could Be
December 31st, 2008 by K. T. Bradford
First it was rumored that Apple would showcase a netbook at MacWorld, but that seemed to be all based on analyst speculation that they would have to. Apple never feels they have to do anything, though. I’m more hopeful that the TechCrunch rumor of a large-form iPod Touch are true. They claim someone they know has touched a prototype, and considering Steve Jobs contention that an iPhone is like a netbook, it seems pretty likely that this is the direction Apple could go instead of a mini MacBook.
An oversize iPod Touch isn’t exactly like a netbook — it would have no keyboard, after all. I predict that if this device does come to fruition it won’t be long before there are a ton of cute, white, overpriced accessories that bring it to netbook functionality. I can almost perfectly envision the fold-up keyboard and stand (maybe with a dock) that will hold the Touch in landscape mode. It may even connect wirelessly but still have a dock for USB inputs, VGA output, and any number of other useful ports.
How about something to appeal to Cult of Mac vanity? A wall mount for the Touch that will keep it close to the computer for ease of connection but allow users to display the screen as if it’s art — a high-end digital frame? Perhaps one that doubles as a second monitor?
The possibilities are making my head spin. Why didn’t I go into product design like mom always told me to?
If the mega iPod Touch (Touch Grand?) is destined to be a reality in 2009, maybe the rumor will be confirmed at Macworld next week. Go out with a bang, Apple!
