iPhone 6 EarPods May Monitor Your Heart Rate (Update)

Update: The source of this rumor has come forward admitting it was a hoax.

Apple’s iPhone 6 may feature a new pair of EarPods that would double as a fitness tracker. The latest rumor points to earbuds that may be able to track your heart rate and blood pressure.

The rumor comes by way of an anonymous post on Secret, which was reposted to Reddit. The headphones apparently will also be compatible with Apple’s iBeacon technology to prevent users from misplacing them.

Apple was awarded a patent in February for a similar concept. However, as MacRumors points out, the patent for Apple’s biometric sensing headphones was filed in 2008.

Adding to the potential validity of this EarPod rumor is Apple’s upcoming iOS 8 software. According to various leaks, the iPhone maker’s upcoming OS will include a new Healthbook app that will allow users to track their blood pressure, heart rate, nutrition, respiration rate and more.

If Apple’s EarPods do come with biometric sensors, it would make a lot of sense. Many people work out while listening to music, and with a heart rate monitor built into your headphones, tracking your progress would become infinitely easier than donning an additional device like a fitness band or smartwatch.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 has a built-in heart rate monitor, but its integrated into the back of the phone, which could be awkward to access while running. The company does sell separate devices that can track your heart rate, including the Gear Fit band and Gear 2 smartwatch.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 8 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, but the iPhone 6 likely won’t debut until the fall.

And to to think I go walking to relax, take in the views, pet the dogs along the way, and enjoy the fresh air — now this. Taking the medical contraptions along with you — not sure this makes my day. :/

its being reported on other sites that this rumor was a hoax and isn’t true anymore. I thought I was a good idea.
