iPhone 5 Gets Major Changes and August Launch, Source Says

Jun 21, 2011 02:09 PM EDT by Dan Hope, TechNewsDaily Staff Writer

There has been some contention over whether Apple will release a completely new iPhone this year, or an “iPhone 4S” that’s just an updated iPhone 4. A new source has confirmed that, indeed, the next iPhone will feature major design changes and launch as early as August.

Boy Genius Report, a technology site with a solid record for rumors, has independently confirmed with anonymous sources that the iPhone 5 has a “radical new case design.” While there aren’t specificsĀ  about just what kind of design changes are in store, it jibes with previous rumors that the iPhone 5 would have a thinner tear-drop shape. Previous rumors of a larger display could also fit this criterion.

The release date of the next iPhone has also been up for debate. Apple is about to miss its traditional June iPhone announcement period, and many have speculated that Apple will wait for its (also traditional) September iPod press event to announce a new iPhone. BGR reports that industry sources are pointing toward a new launch event for the iPhone 5, likely to happen sometime in August 2011.

The latest source said the iPhone 5 announcement would happen in the beginning or middle of August, with a shipping date in the last week of August. It’s not clear if this is an iPhone 5-specific event or if the iPod event will simply be moved up a month.
