iPhone 4 vs. iPhone 3GS: Worth the Upgrade?

Apple says that the iPhone 4 is the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone. But does it live up to the hype? How much better is it than its predecessor? A lot better. It’s much thinner (though slightly heavier), lasts longer on a charge (thanks to Apple’s A4 chip), and will offer two-way FaceTime video chat. You also get HD video recording and an all-new three-axis gyroscope that should make gameplay even more immersive.

What’s more, the iPhone 4 which we reviewed (and loved) on AT&T, is also now offered by Verizon. This pairs the superb handset with a more reliable data and voice network. The 16GB and 32GB versions of the iPhone 4 cost $199 and $299 regardless of which carrier you choose. If you stick with AT&T though, the 8GB iPhone 3GS costs just $49.

Check out the spec and feature comparison below between the iPhone 4 and 3GS and let us know if it’s enough to tear you away from your current iPhone or another Android phone. Is there anything you think is missing (other than Verizon 4G LTE support)?

  1. Mark Quick Says:

Got one of the first models and passed on the 3Gs but I cant wait to get my hands on this one.

  2. bolezhinkov Says:

I’m pretty sure you can get a 3GS with more than 8GB of storage.

  3. Matt Says:

I have gotten every iPhone that Apple has come out with (exception of the 3G, I went for the 3GS instead). To me it’s worth the upgrade. The price is reasonable and there are enough new features to sway people into picking one up. The iPhone 4 should allow app producers the ability to create some fantastic apps. The 3-axis gyro alone will allow for some fantastic games to be created but let’s not forget about the graphics. This phone has, as Apple says, the most pixels per inch and best resolution ever achieved on a smartphone. iPhone 4 sports a 960 x 640 pixels, 326 ppi screen which will allow for truly crisp images, videos, etc. The cameras are better than ever before along with recording video. It’s almost to the point where I won’t need to carry around my digital camera anymore. I think Apple has hit another homerun with this phone. I guess time will tell.

  4. Sarah Says:

3GS maximum internal memory 8GB? Er, no. The 3GS is only avaliable with internal memory of 16GB or 32GB, just like the iPhone 4. I’m typing this comment on a 16GB iPhone 3GS.

  5. Abe Says:

You are incorrect on the 3GS memory. It is available in 16gb and 32gb versions. What else are you wrong about in this comparison?

  6. Jeff B. Says:

The 8GB 3GS is a NEW iPhone that will be available for $99. They will no longer offer the 16GB or the 32GB version (as they would more directly compete with the iPhone 4).

  7. Mike Says:

Yes your are right, kind of… The 3gs use to be offered in a 16GB and 32GB but since iphone 4 came out you only have an option of getting the iphone 3gs in a 8GB form and allowing the iphone 4 to come in a 16GB and 32GB. You can check out these specs on the apple website.

  8. Willis Says:

U guys need to realize that they are only camparing it with a 8GB cuz when they start selling the 4G they will stop selling the 16&32GB so there won’t be competition against the 4G

  9. Steve Says:

I am pretty sure that the 8GB is only for 3G not 3GS as before i wanted a 8GB 3GS they told me 3GS dont come in 8GBs.
3GS is 16/32GB so its same as iphone 4.

To be honest i wont upgrade as i dont do video calls, and rarely take a video of something. My iphone is only used for phoning, surfing internet, playing games, playing music or double as a PDA. so 3GS is pretty much good enough for me.

  10. Callum Says:

The iPhone 4 is a big step. A lot of people have complained about the only 3mp camera compared to other smartphones with 5-9mps. Apple have polished the design, I love the new look. I ask only one this, If you get the pay as you go version, would talk time be free as it uses WiFi?

  11. Me Says:

I prefer the look of the 3Gs. And is the 4G really that different? Bigger camera and better quality video. Big deal!

  12. say what! Says:

I just got the 3gs and it is a very fast phone. Why get the iphone 4 when there will be a better one coming out next year. I will just wait til then. Because i need a unlimited data plan like my 3gs have and the iphone 4 dont. So you really cant take advantage of the Iphone 4 if you not willing to come out of your pocket again!

  13. Luis Garcia Says:

Apple will not come out with a new iPhone next year. As steve said in the WWDC, “We think this will set the standards for the next few years.” The spotlight for next years WWDC will be a new Mac and a New iPad. Apple will skip one year of iphones.

  14. James Wilson Says:

I have the Iphone 3GS and i don’t see the point in upgrading at all the only main new features of the iphone 4 are The facetime app which lets you video call people, but this only works over Wi Fi so you would have to be in your house, your office or an internet cafe to use this feature, a better camera and a longer battery life of course there are other new features but these are the mean ones and are they really worth upgrading for?

  15. anthony Says:

@ say what. if you already have an unlimited data for 30 a month then you can keep it whether or not you change phones. the mandatory data plan changes are for new customers only… and @ james wilson. not saying its happening everywhere or that enough ppl will have video calling to be worth it but a lot of townships and whatnot are getting city wide wifi. or are planning too

  16. Jordan Says:

Am a proud owner of a 3gs 16gb. I am perfectly content with it’s speed, resolution, battery life, and camera. I don’t really see the face to face thing as a big deal seeing as it can only do it with a wi-fi connection. With the new os the 3gs will be able to do most of what the iphone 4 can anyways. I’m not seeing it really being worth the upgrade cost.

  17. The oracle Says:

It’s all upto personal preference really, both are good phones. I will wait till 2011 as a new iPhone 4 will be coming out. This info was provided by internal apple staff. The iPhone 4 launch is similar to how it was when they launched the iPhone 3g. The 3gs followed within the space of 2 years. As the smartphone war is set to intensify I don’t see apple keeping the iPhone 4 for a few years as someone said in a previous post it simply doesn’t make any business sense. The data plan on the 3gs is brilliant and with only 500mb given on the iPhone 4 you will end up spending money if your a heavy mobile broadband user.

I predict the iPhone 4 will comeout in a different variation like the iPhone 4gs and it will be 4g rather then 3g. Plus the phone will build on the iPhone 4… It’s probable launch will be around July 2011 so in retrospect it isn’t really that long of a wait for those who want to hold back.

Either way you can’t go wrong and that is what apple are very good at capitalsing on.

  18. Feynix Says:

@The Oracle If you base your purchase on the assumption of “the upgrade will be available next year” you will never be the proud owner of any new electronics gadgets, especially smartphones. The upgraded version will ALWAYS be available next year until Moores law takes effect.

  19. Greg Says:

Even if they do make a new iPhone after the 4g, how much of a difference will it make? What are they going to do to the the 5g or 4gs to make it better than the iPhone 4? Better camera? No than they will just be wasting money? Better resolution? No because as apple said, this resolution is clearer than the eye can see (correct me if I worded that wrong). And I doubt that they can make it any faster, and if they did, will it really be making a difference…? So what I’m trying to say is there is not much to upgrade from the iPhone 4…..

  20. supa Says:

check out all the problems iphone 4 is having with reception issues when holding it by the sides! also go to youtube and check speed tests of iphone 4 vs 3gs the diff is less then a second on most apps and some websites 3gs wins the 3gs was a biggre leap from the 3g then iphone 4 is from the 3gs!

  21. Daz Says:

@ Supa, agree with you, i have a 3gs and am satisfied with it and will hold off untill 2011, i went into my local vodafone shop and tested the signal antenna drop myself, its an unforgivable mistake by apple, extra speed and mega pixels mean nothing to me compared to a stable signal and reliable phone service, which this will not provide. I even managed to get the suignal drop on both sides of the phone standing in the vodafone shop , which has its onw antenna on the roof, the phone dropped to 2 bars, if i was in an area that only had 3 or 4 bars, then it would pretty much drop the signal completly. I cannot justify dropping £599.00 on a new iphone with a problem like this especially as my 3gs suffers none of these issues.

  22. bhaskar Says:

No guys, this site is right…. Now iphone 3gs is only available model is 8gb @ 99$. Very obvious yaar who will buy 3gs instead of 4g specially when they costs same.

  23. Chris Says:

Running multiple apps…thats why the iphone 4 beats out all previous models…

  24. René Says:

Chris, the iPhone 3gs can also multitask. It’s in iOS 4. It is only the iPhone 3g and 2g who havent got multitasking.

  25. Justin Says:

I like the iPhone 4. It’s amazing, unfortunately I have an iPhone 3GS. Apple knows how to make your last year iPhone obsolete. But for some reason, it isn’t as tempting to upgrade to the iPhone 4 compared to last year when I wanted to upgrade from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS.

The retina display is amazing, but it doesn’t change my experience with my iPhone. Same boring home screen. The better camera doesn’t change it either, but it is nice, and will look a lot nicer on my HDTV. Also the flash is great that I can’t complain about. The new front-facing camera is really nice, but I find the idea of video-calling akward for some reason. It’s still nice. The faster processor it’s not really that much faster, it’s more or less of a iPhone 3G to iPod touch 2G faster cause Apple A4 is based on Cortex A8 with newer instruction sets to save battery and allow higher clock rates. The thing is iOS works so smoothly with any processor even ones clocked all the way down at 400MHz so that’s not really something needed to worry about unlike what Android users have to do (400MHz is hell for them lol)

But what I really care about, is the new design of the iPhone 4, it’s so thin and so sexy. That’s really the only reason I wanna upgrade.

Thanks Apple for not making the 3GS feel as obsolete like they made the 3G did last year :)

  26. helen Says:

man all these people going on about the 16gb and 32gb being available – no it’s not, not anymore. Geez.

Here in australia it was really worth getting the 3gs in its disconinuted sizes as there was a huge runout offer. The 4g will be much more expensive, with a change that is mostly cosmetic and camera related. I don’t really care about sharpness of screen if I can’t see it in sunlight. But it is sexier..

  27. me 2 Says:

in my opinion the 3gs has a cooler design, and it is more comfortable to use.the 4g is thicker and works exactly the same speed as the 3gs does.the 3gs can still be bought with 16 or 32 gb ,seeing as i bought the 16gb one when the 4g was out.

  28. Mars Says:

Ive had each model. I was torn apart b/w an iphone 4 and an ipad(wifi-3G). But the iphone 4 really has no compelling features apart from the A4 chip. If you want a bigger megapixel camera youll end up using your digital camera/camcorder. No use in trying to use your iphone since you wont really be able to email the huge picture on ATTs overcrowded network. Same for the facetime chat, if its only wifi, it kinda loses its magic. So id think about the ipad, but since some say the ipad will come out with a new version in 2011, ill wait to see if its REALLY special or if its not, itll drive down the prices on the older ipads. i guess its really a matter of each person’s personal budget. If u have money to spare youll get each gadget, everytime, no matter what…me, personally, i have a 15 yr old, and diapers and food as well as saving for his education takes precedence, so i have to stop buying each new apple product and start buying every other one or so :)

  29. freebiejeebies Says:

Chris, the iPhone 3gs can also multitask. It’s in iOS 4. It is only the iPhone 3g and 2g who havent got multitasking..

  30. Kellex B Says:

I have a 3GS 16g and I love it my contract isn’t up until 12/6/11 so I have a while to wait but I don’t mind waiting b/c. I’m running on ios4 so I have almost everything the iPhone 4 has.
So my question is..by December next year do you think that there will be a newer version of the iPhone?

  31. Samer Says:

I am choosing to stay with my 16GB 3GS, I really think Apple has purposedly created their mistake with the iPhone 4 reception problems. I believe their idea is to make a good phone with a minor mistake (does this ring a bell? Windows Vista) and wait for some time and bring out a newer “fixed” iPhone (ring a bell again? Windows 7) to make a even bigger profit.
Or they really don’t test their phones and will have a major media exposed recall.

  32. Samer Says:

Also in Canada being a country that can afford these products, unfortunately we do not have this iPhone available which is ironic. Since the 3G release we have been in line with the USA release dates.

  33. Jeannie K Says:

I’m thinking of returning my Iphone4 for a 3GS as reception is the most important for me, does anyone now how limiting 8gb is, I’m mostly gonna call, check email, do GPS, and surf the web on a low basis, not gonna have lots of apps or be downloading much. Thanks!

  34. Wes Says:

Jeannie K, I don’t know how this would be possible, but I’d be more than happy to trade my lightly used 32GB 3GS for your iPhone 4! E-mail wesb84@aol.com if interested.

  35. Sarah Says:

@Mars your 15 year old wears diapers? I think this is the bigger issue you should be worried about!

  36. Kurt g Says:

The iphone 3gs does not come in 8gb. It only comes in 16 and 32 exactly the same as the iphone 4

  37. X2 Says:

3gs is now available for $99 in 8gb. The 16 gb is $149 where available (the 32 is more) – once sold out they are gone – Apple is not making the 16gb or 32gb 3gs anymore. They are discontinued and if you buy one they can not be exchanged (usually you have 30 days to decide). The 3gs will ONLY be available in 8gb as an alternative to the iPhone 4 which has 16gb for $199 or 32gb for $299 (upgrade or new contract prices). Quit bickering about it and call ATT or the Apple store. This is correct! I just “upgraded” to the 3gs instead of the 4 yesterday – ATT advised against the current iphone 4 model (citing the initial issues) and suggested waiting until the next version possibly. Check it out for yourself…as a downside to the new model (that no one has mentioned), the back side of the phone is now glass, too. And not the same tough military grade ballistics glass as the screen, either…the back is not as tough as the front. Keep that in mind, too. But, seriously, they are both an iPhone….can one really go wrong either way??

  38. Dalton Says:

If you have a Iphone 2G or 3G, I would suggest upgrading to the Iphone 4. If you Have a Iphone 3GS theres only a few main differences like the screen and its new HD capabilities with the iOs 4 upgrade on the 3GS. To all 3GS users, just wait until 2011 when the next gen Iphone comes, your 3GS will then be in the same position as the 3G is now.

  39. Allen Says:

I bought the Iphone 4, well rather upgraded from Iphone 3gs. I’m now getting the 3gs back. There are too many flaws with the Iphone 4, and they need a LOT of time to fix them. Such as the yellow dots on the screen, terrible TERRIBLE hardware set up, and the 3gs is faster for me. Everyone says “Get the Iphone 4″ cause they got it and saw that it sucks, but are in denial. It is no contest, 3GS wins.

  40. James Says:

I am upgrading my HTC touch for an iPhone. And I dont know if i should get the 4 or the 3GS. it seems that the 4 has better video but not so good signal. is there any other major things besides mem. size?

  41. Mike Says:

i have the iPhone 3G, and since i updated it to the newest software its been really glitchy and laggy and slow. i was on the home screen and i pressed the iPod button, and it took my phone 13 seconds to open my music. nothing is really running smoothly anymore, and im thinking of buying the new iPhone 4. any opinions?

  42. Wut? Says:

Did someone really say Apple will be skipping 1 year of updates for the iPhone 4? Do you realize what happens in 1 year of sitting still and not continuously improving the product? The competition will eat you alive.

  43. Cacker Says:

iPhone 4 will be revised early since they had so many probelmS with reception

  44. the best thing to do Says:

to all people the other phones are higher than 5 mega pixel and have xenon flash or dual led flash and touch focus or auto focus smile and face detection list of phones you will like
    Sony Ericsson satio
Sony Ericsson vivaz and vivaz pro
    Htc hd2 and Htc hd3
    XPERIA X10
XPERIA X10 mini and mini pro
    omnia 1810i
    galaxy s9000
and again apple is like paying 700 $
for a kids toy with a camera and shit store with shit tunes

  45. Ky Says:

I upgraded from HTC to iphone 3GS 32g late last year wow it works like a workhorse. Here in Australia the iphone 4 was released last month with plenty of fanfare and typical hoopla by the major telco’s to the point that they ran out couldn’t get enough in stock. I managed to upgrade my 3GS with the IOS4 a couple of months ago to get the sense of an iphone 4 and whilst I don’t intend to video call and my 3GS is encased in fancy covers for each month of the year LOL. Cheap as chips they are at the markets these covers I think the 3GS certainly meets my needs. The 3GS camera photos I think a better than my digital panasonic and I have upload onto facebook & twitter no problems particular overseas using hotel wifi. My contract ends late 2011 when I asked about what deals I can get with my current telco provider to upgrade to the iphone 4 I realised I was getting the sale pitch and the additional cost on top of my current contract would have me on bread and water for the next 12 months. So maybe wait until this contract ends before upgrading I think but certainly a true believer of iphones, ipods & ipoo’s

  46. Brandon Says:

ughh i dont thin kits worth it. bcuz the iphone 4 has a calling problem u c…. when u calll call sum1 one the iphone 4 and if u put a finger on the line on the side the call is gonna end or sumthign like that…. thats waht i herd

  47. David Says:

@ Mike: I have a 3g too and like you, i upgraded to 4.0 software and my phone is being really glitchy and super slow.

After reading all of these comments, i think i’ve decided to get a 3gs because I know its reliable and there really isnt that much difference. and how can you beat a $99 iphone?

  48. iPhoneUser Says:

Sarah and Abe, err.. the article is right about the GB capacity. obviously you are outdated.

  49. ahmed Says:

Well i have a nokia right now and im planning to get an iphone and im seriously stuck with a dilemma…..should i wait for the iphone 4 to release her in the U.A.E. or should just go ahead with iphone 3gs. Mind you in the middle east isnt like America where the difference in prices is just 50 100 or 200 dollars…it’s usually 2000 or 3000. So my question is to people who tried both phones……should i wait for the iphone 4 (which is going to be double the price of the iphone 3gs when it releases here) or should i go for the 3gs? Also are the differences worth 2000 bucks extra?

  50. hola Says:

You are officially a gay fa*. the iphone 4 is beast, by far the best smartphone, and the reception problems are fixed! stupid outdated retard…..

and dont anyone else say i’m immature and childish cause im effin fifteen! so suck on it beeaach!!!

  51. Nathan Says:

    I have an iPhone 4.
I love it, and honestly guys, you name me ONE smartphone that doesnt drop its reception? If you live in any other country/state other then america then you wouldn’t have a problem. In australia the phone doesnt drop, I mean it does, only because of it’s IOS4 which shows the REAL reception, as for IOS3 shows you always full bars, yet with IOS3 phones used to cut out and people started wondering why? Ill tell you why, its because it showed fake reception bars, which is why they admited it.. you can have an iPhone 3GS and update to IOS4 after having IOS3 and you will see the bars drop. If someone gave you an iPhone 4 to swap with your 3GS tell me you wouldnt do it?

  52. jack o'c Says:

i have a iphone 3g but it is crap and its like broken so should i get the 4 or 3gs please help me

  53. jack o'c Says:

dose the iphone 4 have alot of probelems

  54. Dev Says:

    @jack o’c

Do yourself a favor and get the iPhone 4. It does have it’s problems, but every phone does, I personally upgraded from a 3GS and the FaceTime feature on the iPhone 4 makes it worth the upgrade alone.

  55. RalphCorsiga Says:

hey guys! I am currently in a confusion mode.. I really dont know which phone to buy, iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. I am planning to buy this coming December. I really do want the iPhone 4 but the issues are what is pulling me back in buying it. I have not handled an iPhone since I always used other brand of phones. I am not into price, but what is important to me, is to enjoy my first iPhone.. Thanks a lot!!

  56. helper112 Says:

you should get the iphone 4
the first batch of them were faulty but now they are good.

  57. Andrew Says:

You guys who are saying the storage is wrong, shut up. iPhone 3GS Is available in 8gb on contract. Check apple.com

  58. caitlyn Says:

honestly, i just ordered the 3gs over the 4 and i’m going in later today to pick it up. i couldn’t be happier. a few things about the iphone 4 turned me off: first and foremost i absolutely hate the new design. its so square.. but seriously, and the glass? i am 18 and in college, a phone made of glass just wasn’t an option for me. originally, i thought i would wait for the white version because i actually like it much better in white, but when the date kept getting pushed back i just decided i couldn’t wait any longer, now that my verizon contract is finally up. i decided the facetime & 5 mp’s weren’t worth it, esp since i have a brand new canon.

anyways this was really just my stupid opinion but i think for most people, the 3gs is great. plus most of the cases for the 3gs are much cheaper now and i can’t argue with that! i’m sure i won’t be able to last 2 years with it, as i always want the next best thing. but i’ll be here, waiting for a slightly different design, in white, with less glass and facetime on the 3g network. and maybe, just MAYBE on the verizon network (:

  59. arkhaye Says:

hey guys! been planning to buy iphone4 but my brother told me it has so many problems so i must purchase the iphone 3gs instead.. i know the first batch had some problems but do you think the ones they have now are okay? i mean, can you state some of the problems you have encountered using your iphone 4?

  60. Sneakn Says:

Lol at Caitlin… This 3gs has got parts of glass what do you think the screen is made from? And to help you out more the rear of the 4g iPhone is made from
gorilla glass, if you research it you will know how much better it is haha I have a 3gs and am happily trading for a 4g because I always need to latest thing as most of us all do :) I really think this whole forum was taken out of proportion and you guys need to realize that the 4g is a simple fix all it needs is a buffer around the edges so the 3g reception and wi-fi wireless don’t short circuit once a hand is placed over the left side and the bottom, so just a news flash I know myself with my 3gs ever since new it was protected by a cover :$

This problem is solved quickly by adding any sort of cover which eliminates the short circuit issue!

So just a heads up to everyone if you are choosing a 3gs over 4 g you guys r very crazy and the latest isn’t always the better choice but in this case the 4g will have some better things to look at! HD recording, camera front and rear, flash on the rear! Come on guys haha think of how much the 3gs sucked without flash!

    -sn3akn yo!

  61. Rick Says:

    Hi people

which phone has faster internet speeds? not talking about wifi but roaming internet

    advice would be appreciated

  62. webterractive Says:

I don’t like my service provider; Rogers, so I’ll pass on upgrading since I have a 3GS. Specs in the form of GPU are the same, despite the under clocked CPU and 1/2 the memory I don’t seem to have any issues with the 3GS. I’ll use it to finish my last year with my current provider and move to Telus/Bell and get an iPhone .xx or what ever will be out next year. I might even go Android.

  63. webterractive Says:

When it comes to both phones they both use 7.2Mbps data download. Only difference is the 5Mbps upload rate on the iPhone4 because of the 720p video upload capability. Other than that the penta-band on the iPhone4 just means one more band to operate on which won’t matter to you unless you’re out of North America, so speed is the same.

  64. B Says:

I have the 3gs and its total bollocks so i have just bought the 4 hopefully its better :)

  65. I have an iphone 4 Says:

i have a iphone 4 which i got 2 weeks ago and have had no issues with reception. y would any1 consider buying an out of date version of anything which is what the 3gs is. facetime is brilliant. its really good when im away working and can see my 2 year old daughter aswell as talk to her so for me that is worth it alone

  66. Talking Buttercup Says:

FYI: You can sell your 3GS and get a 4. I went on Craigslist and sold my 16 gb iPhone 3GS (used) for $300 today and that paid my $300 upgrade to my new 32gb iPhone 4. No extra money to upgrade and I even doubled the storage.

Geez though, as a company you know you’ve made one helluva product when you can still sell an old used model for enough dough to get the new one. Well done, Apple.

  67. Keehfuss124 Says:

The 3GS is only available jn a 8GB memery yes they dis make a 16 and a 32 In black and white but since the 4 is avalable they are only making 8GB. The iPhone 4 is not that much different from the 3GS. Screen is better for sure. Super clear. And FaceTime calling. That’s about it. Everything else on a 3GS cam run the same. I thought only the 4 had multitasking. 3GS has it with an updat.

  68. confused lad Says:

i’m thinking of buying an iPhone 4. but, i hear of numerous reception problems. then again, i heard that the reception problem is in the past. theres no more problems like that about the iPhone 4. Is this true? do u think iPhone 4 is rlly worth it?

  69. Keeks Says:

I am really heading to get an Iphone 4 too B2A, but i really can’t decide wether it worth or not …..this is ma first time to hand on an Iphone …so I am pretty hesitant, and even i heared tht Apple gonna release the White Iphone 4 with an internal new design to overcome the reception problem on 30th of september….so if any of u guys could give an opinion ..I would be very happy ….thx in advance …….

  70. Crismejia Says:

iPhone 4 is pretty much a better 3GS with a speed bump, more memory and some betters here and there. As a 16GB 3GS owner I don’t see a reason to upgrade to this repackaged phone. Though it is pretty sleek, but given the problems with reception I’ll pass.

  71. ryan Says:

Hi people, why dont you just stop debating wether you are going to upgrade i phone 3gs to i phone 4, well this is the answer if you have the money well upgrade your phone why not? if you are poor stick to nokia 5110 lolz hehehe well in my case im rich have a new i phone for and i love the features. I am now connected to my socio economic political friends nw hahaha joke

  72. Tech Guy Says:

I have had every single iPhone. From 2G to the iPhone 4 as of now. I must say that after purchasing the iPhone 4, I am so glad that I did. It makes the 3GS look and feel fat and cheap, because of the plastic back. And the build quality of the iPhone 4 is so much more aesthetically pleasing. It’s so much thinner and feels like it’s build quality is much better in the hand, and it’s so much thinner. And once you use it you will automatically feel spoiled by the graphics and the front facing camera. I don’t think I will ever be able to go back to my old 32gb 3GS. Plus, even poor people have the 3GS and 3G now. An that’s just not a good look.

  73. iMan Says:

I’ve just got the iphone 4. It is not about the money (ryan)! I had all previous iphone versions. This one is not iphonish at all!
It is so square and sharp i can not hold it! You have to put this cases over just because it is aughful to hold it. I wonder how anyone can make this – probably no one from Apple touch it before the approval. BIG dissapointment! Will be happy if i can change it for 3GS!

  74. TeschGuy2 Says:

Tech Guy: I completely dissagree with you about the feel – on the opposite, i agree with iMan – unfortunately the new iPhone 4 doesnt feel pleasant at all.

  75. bside Says:

I have a 3gs which I use heavily for business and personal things. I use just about everything on it. I have owned maybe 30 or 40 cell phones since 1992. Although I can think of some great, reliable and awesome cell phones I’ve owned in the past, the 3GS is without a doubt the best one I’ve had. I went to the Dalai Lama recently for advice on whether I should take the iPhone 4. I don’t know what happened after, but I was dreaming so it didn’t really matter. I’m staying with my 3GS because I’m happy with it. I really won’t need all the new features of the iPhone 4, facetime a few more megapixels, a clearer display, etc. Although it’s nice to have the latest things, it doesn’t mean it’s the greatest. The 3GS was a tremendous improvement from the earlier versions of iPhone. My phone works almost perfectly, although I would probably want eternal battery life, a separate memory card, easily accessible SIM card and a lower monthly fee. Perhaps one day there will be a 4GS, which will be a great improvement over the 3GS, until then I’m staying with my 3GS.

  76. Likethemapples Says:

I have the 3gs and I like it but I am a serious photographer and it is always good to have a spare camera and one that can upload videos to the web , my only concern is the issues they are having with the iphone 4 when I uploaded the new version of software on my 16g 3gs it started dropping calls. I am hoping they will address that issue also I am not a fan of At&T these days horrible service. Also what happened to the white version of the phone I can’t find one anywhere!

  77. Greg Says:

I work in broadcast. Extra resolution is hardly noticeable because of the size. Maybe the resolution might make a difference if the screen is 5 inches. Try watching A hd movie with a 26 inch screen and a 32 inch screen and you will be hard pressed to see the difference. My 3GS 32 gb is plenty fast for everything I throw at it. O used a friends 4g and it feels the same. 35frames per sec and 50 will not show a difference. Of course unless the game runs at 30 fps on the 4g and runs at 15 on older models. 24 fps is minimum for the human eye to percieve smooth motion. Developers will develop apps for the lowest common denominator 3G or 3GS. Save your cash for iPhone 5.

  78. John Says:

Having owned both 3gs and 4g and even the ipod 4g. I love the resolution on 4g don’t be cheap … upgrade. Unless you are broke try to come up with reason to justify your inability to afford a new phone.

  79. JOHN Says:

hi… guys just a quick one I wanna buy I phone 3gs is good to go !!!!

  80. Bensmith Says:

I’m writing on this on a 3gs 16 gb which I bought brand new yesterday. I do have an iPhone 4 as well which is unbelievably better then this one, only bought the downgrade as I require a second phone for abroad use however wish I’d splashed out the extra cash to get another 4

  81. AshSA Says:

I live in South Africa and surprise, surprise my Iphone 3G got stolen, now the time has come for insurance to pay out and i have the option to get the Iphone 4, but i can only get it in Jan next year or I could get the 32Gb 3GS (now) bear in mind in SA we dont have all these unlimited data bundles so it can get rather expensive…
    What do you guys suggest?

  82. Tiger Says:

I have the iPhone 3GS 16gb and it’s way faster than the iPhone 4 16gb and both of them are in 4.1 but the iPhone 3GS is way more faster and better I have the iPhone 3GS and my dad has the iPhone 4 but I’ll never buy the iPhone 4 It just have a front camera and 5 mp camera and flash that’s it it’s no better than the iPhone 3GS so if for any of uou who’s going yo upgrade to 4 then don’t cause when you buy it it’s going to be a waste of money.

  83. Richard Gere Says:

Your 3gs storage specs are wrong, you don’t mention the Mhz of CPU on the iphone 4.

  84. araneta101 Says:

iphone 3gs is much better in terms of having available free application on the net and accessories out on the market..many to choose from. the camera pixel and video call function not really matters. it depends on what kind of usage individual have whether to buy 3gs or the 4

  85. Elly Says:

There WERE 3gs 16G and 32G, that’s why some of you have them. They were permanently discontinued by apple at the beginning of this year. The only iphone 3gs produced now is the 8G. No phone company i know of has any of the higher memory 3gs in stock anymore, the only way you can get one is used from ebay. Marketing to force people to buy the iphone 4 for the increased memory i’m guessing.

  86. iSm4rT Says:

I believe many many ppl said it before (I hope so) but if not, well the recording is 60fps NOT 30fps. It’s 60fps on both of them lol. Any besides, I think it’s not that worth to upgrade to iPhone 4. I’m good with my 3Gs and I will wait for Verizon’s iPhone 5. Pretty sure it will be 3 times as good as the iPhone 4.

  87. sharad Says:

i want to buy iphone 4g -32gb what is the best price & prcedure to get it in India

  88. Barrera Says:

Hi, having handed back in the blackberry at work, I’m going for the iphon Here’s the dilema. I’m not swayed either way on the 3GS OR 4 except for the memory available. As I’m buying new, I’m concerend about the 8GB of memeory. Is this adequate for general phone use, and only accessing work e-mail.

  89. Joe Says:

Going into this Season of Christmas shopping I will be taking the leap into the Iphone but I will be purchasing the 3GS. I dont see the extra $100 really worth it (TO ME) not anyone else; but for my needs. I love the phone and the looks of it, especialy the feel…I like the way it conforms to your hand unlike the squared off half a pound Iphone 4. The Iphone 3GS takes great photos as it is and video quality is just fine for me. Mainly what wins me over is the Iphones web browsing, the phone design, and the 3GS is pretty much bullet proof. I think ill make the switch to the iphone 4 once they release newer features and patches etc. Both phones are excelant but I prefer the 3GS

  90. Jonny Says:

For some reason, I do not like the look of the new one. Those buttons on the side, ugly.

But the new display is of course impressive.

  91. Khalid Says:

an answer to all the questions is ; Iphone 4 is ‘BUILT’ to be better than the 3GS So there is NO-WAY the 3gs is better. To al those who want an iphone 4 but feel hesitated, dont worry its the best iphone made so far. To those who think the previous version is better, please stop making up all that..I bet you will swap ur iphones with an iphone 4 if you were offered to.

Dont hesitate and get your iphone 4 .
think about it this way…to those who think the 3GS is better, name me one spec that an iphone 3GS has and iphone 4 doesnt ??

  92. diego Says:

I have an Iphone 3gs 16GB and if you’re going to swap your Iphone 4 with me for free, I’ll do it! But if I’m going to buy the Iphone 4 just for an upgrade, I’d rather wait for the next gen Iphone 4 come 2011…

  93. Scott Says:

@Khalid. Obviously iPhone 4 is better, but I think what people who are saying is that the difference is not worth the $ for them upgrading. And I that is the reasoning why I’m holding off too. My wife is going to get a new phone upgrade. I’m convincing her that for iphone 4 is not worth $200 when the 3GS for $99 offers everything she could possibly need without the headache of antenna-gate problem.

  94. iPhone 3GS Says:

I have both of them and the iphone 3gs is way faster i think you guys will upgrade but it will be a waste of money cause the iphone 3gs is way more faster and the iphone 4 is fast but not that fast so the upgrade is not worth it apple just made iphone 3gs only 8gb cause they want you to waste your moneyover the iphone 4 cause it has 16 and 32gb and back then the iphone 3gs have 16 and 32gb but they’re just trying to make the iphone 4 more better cause they know if the iphone 3gs have 16 and 32gb they will buy it instead of the iphone 4 so its your chose just read this and make your discision.

  95. Karina Says:

iPhone 5 is COMING SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (:

  96. Justin Says:

Radio Shack is selling the iPhone 4 for $150 and paying up to $125 for the trade in of your 3GS. I just got the 4 for $25. Call around though because you pretty much need to be there the day they get a shipment in.

  97. Sam Says:

I have a question for anyone who has owned both the iphone3GS AND the iphone 4. I previously had a 3GS and just upgraded to the 4, I havent had my iphone 4 for long, but is it just me, or is the 3GS slightly faster than the 4?

  98. Kay Says:

Please – what is antenna gate problem…

  99. EricP3 Says:

And now you can get the iphone 3Gs for only $49! It make the decision a little harder. I think I’ll get the 3Gs for my wife.

  100. Alex Says:

My name is Alex. I am deaf. I have an iPhone 4. 3GS is nice, but iPhone 4 is worth upgrade for the deaf people due videophone reason via FaceTime and tango. iPhone 4 is much easier for the deaf people. Thanks, Apple!

  101. fredjones Says:

What an overpriced piece of crap, hhm I can buy a mobile for $25 or I can pay apple over $500 for their overpriced gadget that apparently does not even work properly that they will try to convince me to upgrade in 12 moths for a similarly useless phone that costs over $500

  102. luke Says:

hi i just want to say my cousin has the iphone4 and my iphone 3gs is WELL quicker and plus the face chat only works wid wi fi soo yh and i think its stupid paying £100 more for the iphone for and thay are both really exspenciv over here in britain but yh i think rthe 3gs is much better

  103. Christoper Hitchens Says:

First of all, you are ridiculous if you think this is not much of an upgrade. If you think that, you are just telling yourself that to not be jealous of the incredible step up with the iphone 4. Video chat works over 3g with skype. The back camera is much better. You can shoot HD video. The GPS chip is better. The phone is smaller. The screen is amazing- the 3gs screen does not even compare. It has twice the RAM of the 3GS. It has a faster processor than the 3GS. And the list goes on.

Oh and the antenna problem? Non-issue. I have had no problems and I use no case or screen protector whatsoever. I have no scratches and no signal problem. I think it’s rare to have the problem, and if you do, guess what? Buy a case and quit your crying. Most people spend more time surfing the net, playing games than they spend on the phone anyway.

Get over your jealousy and pony up the money to get yourself one. I bet you change your tune.

  104. TRG Says:

I think the main question is; Is a two year contract worth the added cost. Yes you can get a refurbed iPhone4 for $99 but you are locked in to spending about $2,000 over two years. So if your dilemma is an iPhone 3Gs for $49 or an iPhone 4 for $99. Go with the iPhone 4. In reality it costs 2.5% more in regards to a 2 year contract. But if you do the math an iPhone costs approximately $661. FYI I have been with ATT for 6 years, done the upgrade from iPhone Gen 1 to 3G (of course cracked all my screens, but unlocked them and sold them on Ebay for about $300). I am iPhone-less currently but I am only spending $45/month which is approximately half that of a bare-bones iPhone contracted plan. But I do miss the convenience of the iPhone, not sure how I calculate that factor, nor the COOL factor of having a great looking phone!

  105. Kori Says:

First of all, the majority of you need to go back to school.
    (someone spelled awful “aughful”)
Nobody is going to take you seriously if you can’t spell. Just saying. I currently own a white 32 gig 3GS and although I love it to pieces, there are many setbacks.
Firstly. The camera. I went from a BB 9700 to this phone. I didn’t think the lack of flash would be an issue but it was. Having a flash makes it that much more convenient, instead of lugging my digital camera around.
Battery life on my 3GS is horrible. I had an 8 am class the other day and my phone was at 100. By 11 am, I had used it 3 or 4 times to text someone, it was already at 40 percent. I’m going to sell my 3GS and get an iPhone 4. The signal problems have been rectified on the newer models and even so, were fixed by putting a case on it and let’s be honest: w

  106. 3GS Says:

the new iphone 5 is not even real so if you think its real then your dumd cause they just made up rumors

  107. rbl Says:

i want to buy the iphone 4 in India…its not yet officially launched in here…bt its available in the the grey markets…is it worth buying it from there without the bill…if not…plzzz suggest me smethin other than waiting ;-)

  108. 3GS Says:

I have the 3GS 32GB and an IP4 and in real terms there is no real difference that YOU can detect unless the mind control is on, on your Iphone4. I do prefer the feel of the 3GS in my hand since it has an organic shape. I have the latest OS on the 3GS and it multi-tasks fine. The IP4 is fine it does the job too but I hate the shape – too sharp on the edges. ..I can feel it under my pillow at night… not good design, more form that function. Anyway just be careful not to let the mind-altering waves from that band on the IP4 control your mind too much. If you find yourself camping in front of a white goods store for the Iphone 5GS with copper band … just buy a magnetic wrist band to counter the waves to block the apple waves or buy some of those dome shaped shoes they will help too.

  109. lizzy Says:

Im an AT&T user,,,,right now I have a blackberry but im going to upgrade. AT& T has the Iphone 3GS on sale for 50 bucks……its a good buy but which one is better the Iphone 4 or the Iphone 3 GS. Need some input so I could decide

  110. Adam Says:

First of all, who cares if someone doesnt spell right its faster and you can still tell what they are saying Kori Secondly I have just bought the Iphone 4 and I am satisfied with the improvements of the camera and the pixels as the images are crisp. There isnt any bugs and this thing about the sides slowing down the call or whatever…. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP

  111. David Says:

Tech guy u are a jerk, to say that even poor people have the 3GS and it doesent look good. That’s total crap because who really cares if poor people have it who are u to judge anyone atleast poor people don’t judge like u do I have a 3GS I have had the iPhone 4 and I prefer the 3GS to it the phone is virtuAlly the same aside from shape and a few added features I use tmobile on mine and it’s really inconvenient to trim my sim so poo on u tech guy u the only one who is allowed to judge is God,Alla,Budda and so on not some stupid ignorAnt tech guy so sit on it u doush

  112. Jonas Says:

  113. Redneck says Says:

It’s all in the preference 3GS is great but no flash on camera. So I will upgrade to the I4 or to I5. Cause flash on the camera makes a big difference I have seen it with my own eyes

  114. enirehtak2011 Says:

iPone 3GS is no longer available as 16GB or 32GB. Apple used to make them with that amount of memory, but in order to reduce the price, they no longer make them with this amount of memory.. The only reason I know this is because I was thinking about getting the 3GS instead of the 4, but I am not sure anymore because of the lack of memory.

  115. iD Says:

    the final solution(s):

new iphone users: buy a 3gs from ebay and enter the fancy world of Apple, test it.. if you like it, wait for the incoming iPhone 5, if you don’t like it.. you haven’t waste a lot of money

whoever already have an iPhone 3gs: upgrade it and wait for iPhone 5, your money investments will be much longer until iPhone 6/7

  116. palmman77 Says:

ok I work for a company where I can get xtra deals on phones from AT&t and go to there special business sight…they have all the iphones there for sale…3g…3gs in 8, 16, 32, and yes even the white ones..my question is should i go with the 3gs 32gb for $79 or the the Iphone 4 for $99…I really like the space benefit as I would use it to replace my 30gb ipod classic, but I do like the specs of the 4 better…there are no special deals as of right now on the 32gb iphone 4…any suggestions

  117. Tristan Barrett Says:

First the 3Gs come in memorys 16 an 32 also i have a16 an my brother has a 8 and also there Prices have dropped like crazy i wish i got my iphone for 50 dollars plus with the iphone 5 in september it will be a 3G 3Gs upgrade so when that happens the 3gs will go out the window pretty much exept for the people who all ready have one so might as well upgrade to iphone 4 its the new design sadly its a damn box like for real buts its real sleek whichis nice

  118. Khalid Says:

    dear all
i am sure that apple dose not put any product have such a little problem all the world knows that i don’t know how to talk about iPhone 4 like this it’s really new generation of technology with all properties and new with everything but there is something want to say everyone cannot buy this phone he can talk bad about it so why it is still too expensive till now and why a lot of people still buy it ??
anyone can get iPhone 4 i tell him go ahead
    thanks for all
    my regards

  119. raghav Says:

    i hav a nokia x6

    Plz suggest

  120. blahblahblah Says:

The 16gb and 32gb 3gs:s would compete with the iphone 4? What the heck, all the money will still go to apple!! I think it’s up to the people to choose which will fit their needs more..

antenna, not that good. not à big difference since 3GS?

3GS doesen’t have the antenna problem. it’s fast. the shape is great and comfortable.
the minuses is the battery time, the shell gets cracks(?), mostly on the white ones. and it gets slow of u have
lots of apps and so on. but that’s all.

  123. Chris Ray Says:

hey im going to get one very soon…is the 3GS still in style?

  124. Dr. Mark Nelson Says:

I got the iPhone 4 upgrade specifically because it will act bring in 3g signal and transfer it via wi-fi to my MacBook Pro! If I am ever somewhere that doesn’t offer me access to wi-fi; I just use my iPhone 4, and I’ve got wi-fi. Also, the sound is clearer, it is louder, and I like the photo and video offerings of the”4″ better than my old 3GS.

  125. codey Says:

i live in sudbury ontario canada. and i jist purchased an 16gig black iphone 4 today. i had my 3GS sim card punched out to fit in my iphone 4. it works great. other then the service issue i have with it. iv done research yea the metal strand is the antenna yaddy yaw, but when im at home, i usually have 3 bars with my 3GS, and i use my 4, i have 1 or none or “searching”, i can watch the service fall in my hand or sitting on the counter. its bad enough i use my 3GS at home, and my iphone 4 in town. i dont know if the sim card has something to do with it, i was told it shouldnt. but who knows technology today. im not an expert. i personally never complained once about my 3GS, other then “i want better graphics”, the 4 has got that pretty good. the cameras, dont care for. the looks of the 4 is better i find. other then the service issue i have, the 4 is good, but if i can use my 3GS at home and out.. i might just sell the 4 if i cant get an conclusion to my service issue.

  126. Dicko Says:
