Intel Non-Announcement: Atom Processor For Low-Power Laptops
Today Intel announced the Intel Atom processor, which is the name for the new family of low-power processors specifically for mobile Internet devices and affordable Internet laptops. This family of devices has gone under the code name of Silverthorne or Diamondville for the past few months. They have also unveiled a new name for the Menlow platform, which is now the “Centrino Atom.” According to the company’s press release:
The Intel Atom processor is based on an entirely new microarchitecture designed specifically for small devices and low power, while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatibility consumers are accustomed to when using a standard PC and the Internet.
Nothing new there. We are just patiently waiting to see the first integrations of these chips hit the market. Something tells me we are just waiting for that Wi-Max thing .
