Intel Demos Host of Atom-Based Systems

August 20th, 2008 by Joanna Stern

If you didn’t already know, the Internet is growing. And Intel plans on staying neck and neck with that growth with its low-power, low-cost, Intel Atom processor. General manager of Intel Ultra Mobility Group Anand Chandrasekher took center stage this morning at IDF to talk about the future of Internet devices and the Atom processor.

Chandrasekher showed off some pretty neat things including the OQO running on the Intel Atom processor. Not only is this the first time we have seen the OQO running on the Atom processor (it was previously using VIA’s C7M) but it was also the first time we have seen that device play back a 1080p high-definition video. That same device was demoed running World Of Worldcraft. Not too shabby. Hopefully, we can take another stab a review.

Lots of other Atom powered mobile Internet devices (MIDS) were shown on stage, including the Panasonic MCA Medical Toughbook (the mystery tablet that was teased in yesterday’s keynote). Fujitsu also announced that its Lifebook U820 will be made available for the U.S. market.

He closed by talking about Moorsetown, the future smartphone and MID platform. The chip is due out by mid 2009 or early 2010. A short video was shown at the end teasing the types of devices we will see from the future chip. The device demoed was very iPhone-looking. Could we see a Moorsetown-running iPhone in 2009?

Unfortunately, a dual core Atom processor was not annouced at the keynote. However, according to CNET a dual core Atom is being planned by Intel for a September launch.
