Hulu Blocks BlackBerry PlayBook Access
April 21st, 2011 by Meghan J. McDonough, LAPTOP Web Producer/Writer
That was quick. Nary a day after its release, the BlackBerry PlayBook has been blocked by Hulu. We knew it couldn’t last, but we thought it might take a little longer than 24 hours. It’s a shame really, because the PlayBook is the first tablet with Flash baked directly into its browser and, as we noted in our review, aside from YouTube, there aren’t many other video options built-in to the tablet.
Hulu has a long history of censoring itself on mobile devices, though it is available on iOS devices — if you subscribe to Hulu+ for $7.99 a month and don’t mind still viewing ads. Hulu promises that an Android app is coming soon for Hulu+, but who knows if it will be just for phones or for phones and tablets? Hopefully it’ll be for both.
While we’ve tried to circumvent Hulu’s block on a few different devices, it doesn’t seem possible. It seems that Hulu is able to detect what version of Flash you’re using — Mobile versus Desktop — and block you based on that.
