HP’s Elite Webcam Packs 12MP for $99
HP, not a usual suspect in our webcam roundups, just unleashed a beast of a cam
era, the Elite Autofocus webcam. I don’t use the word “beast” lightly: its boxy shape is conspicuous, and even a bit sinister. That said, its specs steamroll those of every other $99 webcam on the market: it takes 12-MP still photos and 3-MP video, outputs HD video, autofocuses, and has an instant chat button that you can sync with every major IM client, including Skype and AIM. Although its size is clumsy, you get a plug-n-play, pan-and-tilt design that fits any LCD. Look for the Elite Autofocus in Best Buys nationwide starting April 6th.

Will this webcam work on leopard?

Good question. If this spec sheet is accurate, it’s not Mac-friendly, Leopard or otherwise. http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/dht/files/HP-kronos-webcam.pdf

Rickrobin,
Did you ever get an HP Elite webcam and use it on a Mac? Do you know if it will work with a mac?

The HP Elite webcam is UVC compatible and some claim it is the best, or second best, webcam available for a Mac. Because of this, it should be compatible with a range of operating systems and devices including the Playstation 3 & XBox 360.
For the Mac, you might need to run Leopard though, I’m not sure if it works in Tiger.

I have a G-5 running leopard. Bought the HP auto foucs elite and all the software that comes with it is
for PC’s. Hewlett Packard does not say in its specifications that it will run on OS X.etc. Amazon.com
can not confirm. A host of web blogs say it works. The camera comes with no manual that is readable other than by a PC. It has one slider and 4 buttons and when connected none of these did anything. So I sent the camera back, disappointed I could not enjoy its SUPER MAC Compatibility that works without drivers and without software. So why does it ship with HP PC software? The HP technical support in India, even if you can understand them, sounds like a recording reading a manuel of specifications. Very disappointing to say the least.

Works perfectly on a Mac, out of the box. I have it working for iChat and Skype, no drivers needed. A couple of things:
1. You MUST have a video capable application running for it to turn on. Simply plugging it in does NOTHING and that’s a good thing (and, AFAIK, is the behavior for all webcams on Macs)
2. I have an Intel Mac running 10.5.8 – YMMV on other Mac platforms.
Will has been posting a lot of angry disinformation on a lot of sites, so I thought I’d actually post a little reality

Chris M – thanks, after reading your comment I was able to get the HP Autofocus Elite camera to work on my Mac Mini w/Mac OS X 10.6.5. Guess i tried the complicated route first by downloading maccam – which apparently made it not work.
