HP Hits With PC Accessories Galore
September 16th, 2008 by Joanna Stern
In addition to releasing two new impressive multimedia notebooks today - the HP HDX 16 and HDX 18 - HP has let loose a scattering of new PC accessories, including mice, keyboards and digital picture frames.
Our favorite is the spill-resistant HP Wireless Comfort Keyboard and Mouse combo ($79.99). The wave-shaped keyboard with a cushioned wrist rest should provide a seriously comfortable typing experience. But even better, the keyboard features 31 hot keys – including a dedicated Alt + Ctrl + Delete button.
Could the addition of this button be further evidence that HP isn’t the biggest fan of Vista these days? All signs point to yes! The mouse features a four-way-tilt scroll wheel and two programmable buttons along with an asymmetric design.
Designed for gamers, HP’s new gaming mice – the HDX Laser Mouse ($39.99) and Laser Gaming Mouse with VoodooDNA ($59.99)– offer up to five levels of on-the-fly sensitivity, allowing gamers to adjust dots-per-inch (dpi) settings up to 3,200 dpi in-game. Using the five programmable buttons and VoodooDNA GUI software, gamers can preset five different macros with five unique profiles for up to 25 different combination of ultimate game-playing flexibility.
The newly announced picture frames come in a variety of sizes, including a portable, 3.5-inch pocket frame and 10-inch cherry wood-finish frame. The frames feature clock and calendar options, support MP3 and other audio formats, and play music through stereo speakers.
Lastly, HP is annoucing some new software that will retail on its site. SimpleSave for music and data provides back-up solutions for digital music and important documents. According to the company all you have to do is insert the SimpleSave disk into the DVD drive and the solution finds all music or documents and saves them to the DVD.

I don’t know why Microsoft and now HP ridiculously think it’s a good idea to change the layout of the editing keys (ins, del, home, end, pgup/dn). Thankfully there are still keyboards being made which respect the standard layout.

I like the hot keys feature, although I’m surprised at the comment that this implies HP isn’t the biggest fan of Vista these days. I want to upgrade my HP laptop and I hate using Vista as my operating system but there seems to be limited HP options to run with Windows XP.

I have an HP Laptop running Vista and absolutely love it. I wouldn’t trade it in for anything. Of course, I have a desktop too, and that runs XP. It’s an older computer, but I love Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse I have on it and wouldn’t trade them in for anything in the world (except maybe if I could get a cordless mouse that has a recharger rather than one that eats batteries). In my mind, wireless keyboards and mice are absolutely essential computer accessories. Both currently appear over at UnSpun by Amazon in their new Most Essential Computer Accessory list.
