How to Video Chat in Google Hangouts for Android

Google Hangouts Video Call

Chatting face-to-face is much more intimate than talking via voice alone. Though it doesn’t have a version of Apple’s FaceTime chat software available, Android has a powerful solution of its own with Google Hangouts. Here’s how to make a video call in Google Hangouts for Android.

1. Download the Hangouts App from Google Play. The app may be preinstalled on your device.

2. Sign into Hangouts.

3. Tap the + button in the upper right hand corner of the app, or swipe from right to left to bring up the “New Hangout” screen.

4. Find the person you’d like to video chat with. You can either click on the contact card in the New Hangout screen, or you can search for a contact by name or email address.

5. Tap the Video Call button. Once you’ve added someone to the Hangout, a Video Call button will pop up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. You should soon be connected to the other party.

Adjusting Settings in-call

On the top of the video screen, you’ll see an option to end the call, send a text message to the other party, and a settings drop down. Buttons along the bottom include a mute toggle, video toggle, sound options (including speaker, headphones and bluetooth toggles), and a button to change from front facing to rear camera. Tapping on these buttons will quickly perform the associated action so you can get back to your call.

This app makes me feel like a moron! Isn’t the point of video chat to see the person you are talking to? I can only see myself as my video camera is showing me and not the person I am talking to. I can’t figure out how to make it show the other person. Why would I want to see myself while I am talking to someone. Help!

Can you help me please. When you try and make a video call on a Samsung Tab3 in hangouts, once video call says connecting, do you have to swipe the screen or do anything else. Can’t seem to get in right. I am an ‘oldie’ though. Thanks

seeing unanswered questions makes me wonder if I’ll be ignored too… but here goes. I live in Canada and want to video conference with US people, share docs in Google docs (I guess.) I have an Ipad and a PC that doesn’t have mic or camera. Also, how to edit Contact for phone number (+1 for int’l code) or is that req’d? Thx!!

Yeah, Google Hangouts has got a lot of buzz, but I’ve been a big fan of RHUB’s service because it’s easy to use and is much more secure.

  6. Andrew Says:

Google Hangouts can be used to make video calls across OS platforms, correct? (Android and IOS) Given that Apple users download the Hangouts app.

Thanks for the great article. Can you help me on a question. Can I tell when someone is in a video call? Does it appear somewhere on their name? I remember hangouts had the feature to show when someone is in a video call (a while ago)
