Video: Hands-On With The Dual-Screen Alex eReader

January 6th, 2010 by K. T. Bradford

spring_design_alexI got an early quick peek at the Alex eReader from Spring Design at last night’s CES Unveiled event thanks to the folks at Marvell Semiconductors. I was only able to play with it for a few minutes, but what I saw intrigued me. The color LCD screen on the bottom is about the size of those you’d find on a smartphone, though a little smaller. It easily responded to touch and the on-screen keyboard worked well as we typed in the URL for laptopmag.com.

The EPD screen isn’t touch-capable, unfortunately. However, one feature I did like was the ability to put web page from the browser on the larger, grayscale screen for easier reading. I’m really excited about this feature as I’ve been looking for a way to combine the ease of downloading my feeds via Google Reader with the comfort of reading all that text on an eReader display.

As you’ll see in the video below, the overall size of the Alex is longer than your typical eReader with a similarly-sized screen. It’s still comfortable to hold, very light and thin, and would slip into a purse or bag just as easily as a Kindle or Nook. We’re going to hear more from the company behind the Alex later this week when we sit down to talk about it’s capabilities, apps on the horizon, and possibly wireless carrier partners. In the meantime, check out our video hands-on below.
