Hands-On: Polaroid Camera Learns from Smartphones

LAS VEGAS — A new Android-powered digital camera from Polaroid promises the same editing, tagging and sharing capabilities that have made smartphone cameras so popular.
The Polaroid SC1630 Smart Camera features a high definition 16-megapixel camera with built in 3X optical zoom, a 3.2-inch touch-screen display and Wi-Fi connection capability.
Smartphones have replaced dedicated digital cameras for many people as their daily point-and-shoot because photos can be manipulated using apps such as Instagram – currently an iPhone-only app which will soon be available on Android – and then instantly shared on social networks.
The newest member of the Polaroid family “unites the beauty of high-end digital images with powerful Android connectivity features,” company president Scott Hardy said in a statement.
“The result is an instant experience of click, capture and share that enables social networks to see and experience the moment as if they were there,” Hardy added.
TechNewsDaily checked out the Polaroid SC1630 at the company’s booth here at CES 2012. As with many Polaroid products, the camera itself is a very handsome device, but the integration of Android leaves a lot to be desired.
Android felt laggy on the camera, and there were few photo-manipulation apps available, although this might just be a symptom of the relative dearth of quality apps on Android in general.
We did like the ability to pair the camera with a Polaroid photo printer, though.
The Polaroid SC1630 will go on sale in April for $299 in the U.S.
