Here’s a weekend project for you adventurous Galaxy Tab owners out there. An XDA forum member going by the handle dviera88 succeeded in putting Ubuntu on a Tab following a set of instructions for putting Ubuntu on a Samsung Epic. As the latest Ubuntu includes some inherent touch functionality, the result isn’t so much a Frankenstein monster as it could be. The OS behaves well, and the Tab’s hardware handles it easily.
The first step to the Ubuntu/Tab wedding is rooting the tablet, of course, and then “you will need Busybox, Superuser, the Android SDK and knowledge on how to use it, AndroidVNC and Terminal Emulator,” according to the XDA developer’s blog. The process seems pretty daunting to me, but I’m sure there are plenty of you drooling with the prospect.
