g-drive-3-4If you’ve been lusting for a high-end SSD to plop into your Mac, G-Technology made a rather enticing announcement Macworld 2009. The storage company announced a new family of external 2.5-inch SSDs: The G-Drive mini SSD and the G-Raid mini SSD.

The 8.5-ounce G-Drive mini SSD (available in 120GB and 250GB capacities) features a nice selection of ports (USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800) for swift file transfers.  How swift is swift? G-Technology states that the data transfer speeds can top 60MBps per second (write) and 75MBps (read) when using the FireWire 800 connection. This travel-friendly requires no AC adapter to power it–simply connect it to a notebook using one of the aforementioned ports and you’re ready to go. The 120GB model has a MSRP of $599, while the 250GB version is priced at $1,299.

The higher-end G-Raid mini drives (available in 250GB and 500GB capacities) add an eSATA connection to the mix and a RAID 0 configiuration, which can deliver a blazing 195MBps data transfer rate. The MSRP for the G-Raid mini drives are $999 for the 250GB version and $2,199 for the 500GB. Both the G-Raid and the G-Drive are expected to be available for purchase in coming weeks, and we eagerly await their arrival  in our labs for thorough testing.
