81 Free Apps That Don’t Suck

eReaders

Aldiko

(Android)

Aldiko is among our favorite eReading options because it immerses you in a book, despite your smart phone’s small LCD screen. Though it only supports non-DRM EPUB books, you can buy or download free books right from the app and add links to your favorite eBook sources. Aldiko offers a wide range of customization—typeface, colors/themes, layouts, even page turn options—and excellent library management via user-created collections.

pReader

(webOS)

This Homebrew app for webOS supports multiple eBook formats, including EPUB, MobiPocket, and plain text. Users can also load titles with MobiPocket and eReader DRMs from eBookstores such as Fictionwise. Interface options let you customize font, text size, and text/background color easily to make reading on an LCD more comfortable.

Stanza

(iPhone)

There’s little doubt that the most popular iPhone eReader app is the best. Between the slick user interface, multiformat support (including limited DRM compatibility), a plethora of customization options, the ability to sync libraries with a PC, and in-app eBook buying, Stanza has it all. The bells and whistles add up to a great reading experience that makes it easy to get lost in a book.

And what about feed readers (RSS)?

Is there anything for the android platform that matches akregator in terms of functionality?

  3. K. T. Bradford Says:

I use NewsRob on Android for RSS feeds. It syncs with Google Reader, so I can manage subscriptions from my computer and the changes go to my phone.

  4. Jesika Says:

WTF its only three apps? why does it say 81 if its only three?

  5. K. T. Bradford Says:

Look at the bottom of the post, the other app categories are listed there. We thought 81 apps all on one page would be a bit much.
