The Five Most Wanted Ultrabooks

Sep 8, 2011 09:55 AM EDT by Michael A. Prospero, LAPTOP Reviews Editor

They’re superslim, wake from sleep really fast, and last at least five hours on a charge. We’re talking about Ultrabooks, a new breed of Windows ultraportable that looks to stick it to the venerable MacBook Air. According to Intel, an Ultrabook must measure less than .8 inches thick. It should also use Intel’s Rapid Start Technology, which should dramatically reduce boot time and help Ultrabooks wake from sleep almost instantly.

So who is making these supersleek and responsive machines? Take a look at four Ultrabooks hitting stores this fall from Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Toshiba and tell us which one is your favorite.

Acer Aspire Ultrabook S3

Weighing 2.8 pounds, measuring 0.5 inches thick, and sporting an aluminum/magnesium alloy chassis, the Acer Aspire Ultrabook S3 is one svelte notebook. It also sports an island-style keyboard and a large touchpad with integrated buttons, similar to the MacBook Air. We like that there's an HDMI ort on board, and consumers will be able to choose between an Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processor. Storage choices include a 240GB SSD, or a 320GB or 500GB hybrid hard drive with embedded SSD. The S3 will resume from sleep in 1.5 seconds, and its battery will last up to 7 hours.

    Not likely!
It is difficult to compete against established product from top company.
Another me too products will not work.
They need to beat Apple on features/price ratio, if those companies cannot innovate.

I think the key issue is the screen resolution. The Macbook Air is the only ultrabook that got it right (1400×900). 768 is simply not enough vertical pixels.
