First Review: Pure Digital Flip Ultra HD

April 30th, 2009 by Dana Wollman

flip-ultra-hd-front-sideIt’s been ages since Pure Digital updated the Flip Ultra the larger of its two pocket camcorder lines (the Flip Mino line being the svelter). Today, though, the company made two new Ultra camcorders official: a standard-def version ($149) and the Ultra HD ($199), which records 720p video at 30 frames per second. We’ve already had plenty of hands-on time with the Ultra HD, and we just gave it an Editors’ Choice (check out the full review here). We dig the clear video quality, loud speaker, and HDMI output, something most other HD pocket camcorders don’t have. Best of all, the Ultra now has 4GB internal memory, while the HD version has 8GB. We don’t even care this time around that there’s no memory slot. The new color scheme resembles the Mino series, although they have a satin feel and discrete buttons, while the Minos are glossy with touch-sensitive controls. It’s bulky, as you can see, but that didn’t stop us from naming it best in class. Other specs: it comes with 2 rechargeable AA batteries (you can pop in your own, too). It has a larger 2-inch screen with a 16:9 orientation, which we were able to see even while shooting outside on a cloudless day. The Flip Ultra costs $149 and the Ultra HD costs $199. They’re available now.

I am very disappointed with my new High Def Flip Ultra. I can download the video to the computer but it will not burn a dvd . I have taken it to 4 different knowledgeable Computer people,, and spoke to the FLIP perosn who explained that you cannot down load high def to a standard digital. also the place where I bought it– Costco– their Tech Team said the same thing- I would need to buy additional software to make this work. My older 1 hour pure digital flip was so easy- i just took it to CVS and they made me a dvd. I now have two hours of my grandaughters pictues on it and cannot burn a dvd. i wanted my money backbut Costco wont give it to me as its over 90 days old. It took me that long torecord 2 hours of her. I am very disappointed. and now will not use it…

I bought this camera because it was supposed to be easy and have fairly good quality results. I originally got the 4G at a Target store. I recorded some videos and wasn’t able to get the software to load from the camera to my computer, (yes, my computer fulfills all of the requirements). I then loaded the software directly from Flip.com and it still didn’t work. So, I exchanged it for another one – thinking that I just got a bad egg. My second FlipHD recorded nicely – but strangely enough, the software would not load onto my computer from the camera and open nicely upon plug-in – just as the tutorial at flip.com/support shows that it will. I took this camera to a computer pro with knowledge and experience hoping that the situation would be corrected asap. Nope. He plugged in the camera and it tries to set up, then bloop – error screen that it FAILED. I am heading back this morning to return the 2nd failure of a FlipHD. Gonna buy a different product altogether. Thumbs WAY down for the huge waste of my time.
