What Are Your Favorite Free Smart Phone Apps?
July 14th, 2010 by K. T. Bradford
Like Santa, the staff here at Laptop is hard at work making a list and checking it twice. But our list involves the best free apps for smart phones, not elf-made toys. Though awesome free apps are often just as good. And you don’t have to wait until Christmas to get them.
Since we know that our readers are very passionate about their smart phones, we figure you’re pretty passionate about your favorite apps, too. Tell us which ones you love, or can’t live without, or have switched phones in order to use. The only restriction is that they have to be free.
The apps can be from any category and for any smart phone OS — iPhone, Android, webOS, even Windows Mobile (if there are still people trying to load apps on those phones).
Post the name of the app, the platform, and why you love it in the comments below.

I like the Lutron app for the iTouch/iPhone. From this app, I can control all the lighting in my home (I have a Lutron homeworks system). I can make sure the garage door is closed, from my bed. It’s a wonderful system.

Slacker Mobile – Not only does it have a gigantic music discovery, but it has apps on iPhone, Blackberry, Android, webOS, AND Windows Mobile.

I actually like Apple’s Remote app – its incredibly simple but it fulfills a need. It allows me to enjoy my library from across the room without needing to get up to press pause, rewind or fast-forward. I can also search through my entire library on my iPhone just like I do the iPod library on my phone. The only downside is that when the phone goes to sleep I have to wait for it to reconnect in order to press pause, which can be irritating when I suddenly need to do so after watching my favorite show for a few minutes.

Shazam in Android is the app I use a lot. I have used it locations that the noise is loud and it still goes out and finds the correct song and artist. The few it does not find are songs my 12 year old daughter needs to know.
