Eye-Fi Unveils Pro Card for Wireless Photo Uploads, Desktop Application

Eye-Fi Pro X2Eye-Fi, maker of those SD cards that can wirelessly beam your photos and videos to your PC and/or your favorite online gallery, is going after professionals more aggressively now. Its new Pro X2 card ($149) offers the kind of speeds that professional (or, at least, more serious) photographers demand. The company also rejiggered the cards so that they automatically delete older content, a feature Eye-Fi is calling Endless Memory. And if you already own an Eye-Fi card, keep an eye out for a desktop application that will take the place of the Web-based interface.

What makes the Pro X2 beefier than other Eye-Fi cards is its standard 8GB of storage, for one, as opposed to 2GB, and the fact that it packs a wireless-N radio for faster photo and video transfers. It also automatically geotags photos, a feature owners of less expensive Eye-Fi cards have to purchase a la carte. This new card is also one that will ship with the Endless Memory mode, which users can disable. Finally, it supports not just JPEG photos, but the RAW format as well, a must for pro photographers. The Eye-Fi Pro X2 is available today.

If you’re an existing Eye-Fi card owner, you’re about to notice some major UI changes. The Web-based interface, located at manager.eye.fi, will be replaced by a desktop application called Eye-Fi Center. Most importantly, users can now upload to multiple destinations (say, Facebook and Flickr) whereas before, users had to choose just one online service. This application is available today as a free download.
