Eye-Fi Direct Mode Bridges Gap Between Digital Cameras & Smart Phones

It’s a common question for photographers: do you take a high quality picture with your DSLR that can’t be shared until there’s a computer nearby or do you sacrifice quality for the immediacy of a smart phone’s built-in camera? Today, Eye-Fi solves that problem with the announcement of their new Direct Mode functionality, which gives photogs the best of both worlds.

Eye-Fi has already made a name for itself with its wi-fi enabled SD cards, but Direct Mode takes it a step further. It wirelessly transmits photos from a camera to a free app on your smart phone or connected tablet and seamless integrates them into your smart phone’s photo gallery and file system. It’ll be available as a free firmware update to all Eye-Fi X2 cards later this year.

Eye-Fi currently allows users to back-up, store, and share images via their Eye-Fi View service, which is available on any device, but Direct Mode enables an even faster, more streamlined method for sharing high quality photos with your friends. We’re looking forward to checking it out at CES.
