imagine when viruses/trojan horses start attacking these machines, what would the little kids do? Is there even support for these systems once they're in those far-off provinces in Africa, Asia or some far-fetched places in the world?

"Children who get the XO might want to go watch a cartoon or two while they’re waiting for the system to start"

I don't think children who will be using XO will have access to cartoons... This may be the only electronic entertainment they will have. So it should better be quick and easy

Unfortunately another bad mistake from the OLPC guys.
They lost all the credibility in the open source scene (which supported this project for all the years) and especially in combination with Windows they are not competitive at all. Intel will bulldoze all over their markets wth the Classmate, which will offer a better performance at pretty much the same pricepoint. (just take a look at the 500k unit order from portugal, which outsales nearly the whole olpc production so far!)

and hell, i am sure we will see also plenty of sub $200 netbooks in the future.

Anyways, this project is called "One Laptop Per Child" and now these kids are getting an 8 year old desktop os. i would love to see that device reviewed by a 7 year old from central africa that can't even read.

heh, it would be pretty sweet if some enterprising kid did get good with a soldering iron explicitly to upgrade XO's by taking chips off of old DIMM's. Find some lower powered wood burning kit and file the tip some. Though solder would be hard to get, and DIMM's probably are a rather exotic thing to "procure" out in the remote areas. Yes I know this probably won't happen but just a fun thought.

Unfortunately the OLPC XO-1's memory cannot be upgraded like conventional laptops. You might be able to get something working if you are really good with a soldering iron, but otherwise it is stuck with the 256MB it was shipped with.

I say splurge on memory and increase the default to an Earth-rending 512MB. Sure, only 64MB was required at original release, but SP2 brought additional services and today's applications are RAM-hungry. Would any of you run XP on less than 512MB of memory? Then why should these kids?
