eReader Apps for Every Smart Phone Platform
June 21st, 2010 by K. T. Bradford
Even though devices with electronic paper displays offer a superior digital reading experience, there are still many consumers who want the freedom to access and read their eBook library on multiple devices, including their phones.
There are two basic types of eBook apps: those created by eBook stores such as Barnes & Noble or KoboBooks.com, and those that open apps for organizing and reading eBooks from multiple sources. Users with an existing library will find the latter type more useful, especially if most of their books are DRM-free. Those looking to build a library, or who already own a dedicated eBook reader such as the Kindle 2 or Nook, will find complimentary smart phone apps more useful, particularly if they include extra features such as syncing the last page read on an eBook. The apps below offer a wide range of features and functions, but the measure of an eReader remains the same whether on a smart phone or a dedicated device: it’s all about the reading experience.
Aldiko (Android)
This Android app delivers a great reading experience but supports only one format.- Amazon Kindle (BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod touch/iPad)
If you don’t mind its lack of customization, the Kindle app is a viable option for reading eBooks on your phone. - Barnes & Noble eReader (BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod touch/iPad)
This app’s well stocked store, easy navigation, and plentiful customization options put it in the front of the pack. - KoBo (Android, BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod touch, webOS)
While Kobo is a competent eBook reader, you can find better options elsewhere. - Stanza (iPhone/iPod touch)
Stanza is one of the few eBook apps to support a large number of formats, giving it an advantage over the competition.
