Eee PC DJ Machine

October 23rd, 2008 by K. T. Bradford

Xavier at Notebooks.com happened upon a Venice restaurateur using an Eee PC 900 as a DJ machine. The system was hooked up to a loudspeaker and a 3G phone so he could download requested songs. Portable, inexpensive, and cool — I love stuff like this.

When I go out clubbing I more often see the DJ utilizing Macs and iPods than traditional mixers these days. And I know from hanging around my DJ friend Marvin Matos that a good Windows-based PC will work, too.

Marvin told me that he uses a USB mixer that syncs into his DJ software, then utilizes a secondary soundcard for output. Seems simple enough! For mixing he’s got an M-Audio X-Session Pro, which, according to the specs, should work on most of the netbooks available with Windows XP or Vista. You could also upgrade to the Torq Xponent which offers even more controls and a quasi-turntable for even more control of the music. Both come with DJ software.

For the secondary soundcard, Marvin likes the Sound Blaster X-fi Go!. Portable and not too expensive, it’s a pretty solid investment for your budding amateur DJ.

I like the idea of turning the Eee PC into a portable party machine. I’d be curious to see some enterprising DJs out there try it out and report back!
