Down Goes the Droid Incredible! Palm Pre Plus Triumphs Again!

July 8th, 2010 by Michael A. Prospero, LAPTOP Reviews Editor

Given the results of the March Smartphone Madness, maybe we should’ve seen this coming, but the fervor of the webOS community lifted the Palm Pre Plus over the Droid Incredible, 35,856 to 25,479, in our first Battle of Champions. Thanks to all who voted, and look forward to title challenges in the future!

Contrary to what some of you thought (and wrote), we weren’t pulling for one phone over another. We just thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if the winners from our two most recent contests squared off against each other.

We suspect that some commenters may have used aliases:

TotalRecall:
The Pre amazes people I show it to in the way Apple used to amaze people. If I were a Steve Jobs fan, I’d tell you it’s “magical” and “amazing”. Since I’m not, I’ll just point out that the phone gets the same great reception in either hand… oh snap!

Al Gore’s Ghost:
Not since I invented the internet have I seen something as advanced as the Palm Pre+. It’s the best phone ever, and it’s very green.

Troy:
I have the Palm Pre (not plus) and due to being able to EASILY jailbreak and overclock this phone I’M LOVIN’ IT!!!!! I am running a 800GHZ processor by overclocking it and have had no problems. I have been able to add a lot of great patches to my phone by installing Preware. I am not computer savvy person but I do know how to read and Precentral.net gave me all the instructions to install these cool FREE programs.

Zach:
As an EVO owner, I voted for the pre. If I could have the EVO with WebOS it would be my favorite phone ever.

Steve Wozniak:
I wish I’d thought of something as innovative as webOS. It’s what the iPhone could have been, and you can hold it in either hand. Brilliant!

Matthew:
I have a Pre Plus and my wife has the Incredible. Overall, WebOs is the best, most intuitive OS I have used. The gestures are simple and make sense, and the notifications are better than on the Incredible. The Incredible has better hardware, the Android Market has thousands of great applications, and the soft keyboard are great. However, I still think the Pre is better. The OS, the ability to use it as a mobile hotspot, the home brew community, and the Touchstone charger are the notable features that tip the balance in favor of the Pre.

Barack Obama:
With the Pre Plus, yes we can. With the webOS community, yes we can. In the laptopmag polls, yes we have, and yes we will. Time for change. and that change is to give webOS the love and respect it deserves. Droid is fine, webOS is superfine.
Yes we can!

nice article. nice results. I hope HP sees the value of the webOS community. Not just a passionate group, but a productive one. the quantity and quality produced by webOS homebrewers is unsurpassed. very impressive for a small (and mostly volunteer) group of enthusiasts. well done!

  2. Cameron Says:

I think disgruntled Nexus one fans came to vote against the Incredible, but still, congratulations Palm Pre Plus and all its fans.

  3. landon Says:

the votes were changing every 5 min, 10 for incred, 50 for pre….obviously voting bots were being used here.

  4. Tony B Says:

“Another win… For the good guys!!!” Good phone.. As a Pre owner I’ve said this before: Had the EVO or Iphone 4 been in this contest, it would’ve been more interesting. For some strange reason the EVO got knocked out way too early in the Droid Cup but that’s the name of the game. Think I would’ve picked the EVO over the Pre (sad 2 say). Anxious to see what HP has in store for us though.

  5. Joel Says:

@Cameron No way! Nexus one fans voting for a palm pre??? together, we are all android lovers!

  6. NuShrike Says:

Does it really matter? The poll obviously doesn’t represent market realities. Palm FAILED! HP bought them, and the product line is at a stand-still!

It’s a total rehash of PalmOS/MacOS/AppleII history where you have fervent followers, and piece-meal software upgrades, but no hardware updates for years. It’s just a slow, painful death. Move on before you lose more of your life.

  7. PhantomMenace Says:

This is good for WebOS. Obviously, it is a quite competent Operating System. I do not own a WebOS phone but I do support it. Admittedly, I did not expect it to win, however, I am well pleased that it did. Salutes to Palm.

  8. Tasselhof Says:

There is no getting around the love a WebOS user has for just doing the day to day on their phone.
This is simply put the Best MobileOS available. Can the hardware go for improvement? – Yes! but is it debilitating? – No!

To further establish our Homebrew/Developer Community as the best out there, we have:
    – 1Ghz Stable Overclock with Compache memory management
    – this make the year old Pre and Pre Plus still completely relevant in today’s market
    – Preware – Absolutely the best Homebrew and Patch program ever created
    – 1 Program allows you to install an Overclocked Kernel, Patches, and Homebrew Programs

Great things are ahead and I can’t wait until we have our new Phones, WebOS Tablets, and a completely integrated network of devices!

  9. PreBabyPre Says:

android phanz, quit whining about bots. I don’t think it was possible, but if it was you have a 10x sized base to do the same.

instead of whining, get down off yoir cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over yourselves already. Give webOS the props earned through these last two contests. Palm is just like apple was 5-10 years ago. and if you spend a day really using the Pre, you will fall in love!. Spend a few hours exploring preware homebrewers, and you will be addicted.

I’d like a slightly larger screen, but a physical keyboard and wireless charging, webOS and the Pre have rocked my world. Give it a try!!!

  10. Pre-Wired Says:

I love my Palm Pre. It’s “Amazing” and “Magical” and as soon as Flash 10.1 becomes available for it, it will be even better. The PRE PLUS RULES!!

  11. jsh1120 Says:

Congratulations to the WebOS fans and their robotic minions. Unfortunately, I doubt it will influence HP’s strategy in deciding whether to promote the Betamax of phone platforms. Still, more is usually better than less in terms of consumer choices. Here’s hoping that the folks who brought us the first portable organizers and the first generation of smart phones can find a niche in a market increasingly dominated by iPhones and Android devices.

  12. Jun Says:

ok this is the last time that i give laptopmag the time of day “when it comes to a contest.” i like this site for info, but from now on thats it. first the super hi tech most powerfull phone the evo gets knocked out by “mytouch 3gslide?” saaay whaaat !!! wheres the logic? then the palm pre beats the htc incredible?? helllll nooo ! so basically what is being said is that the palm pre wups any android phone out !! whoever thinks this has gotta be out their minds. there is no realistic way you can tell me that the palm pre can wup any android phones a**. the evo, the incredible, the droid, will personally hand the palm pres’ rear end to it on a plate with a side of web os. sorry palm pre fans ,dont mean to player hate. but wheres the perspective?? or the logic?? for a phone that cant possibly defeat evry android phone but yet gets to be the winner anyway just means to me that this whole thing is nothing but a huge waist of time. a contest should be about truth not opinions, otherwise its just glorified hyped up gossip.

  13. brum Says:

@ Jun – it’s just a bit of fun. You lost, sorry.

  14. prebugg Says:

@jsh1120 & Jun – obviously it is you who’s illogical… Come on if you think that droid phones have an edge over the palm pre plus because of the fact that it has more apps and better hardware and even more users, then you can never be too wrong. This contest is not about “most apps, best hardware and number of users”… It is the “Best Smartphone” contest… Phones are rated for their overall performance and if you will be able to try using a palm pre plus, you will see that this contest’s result is truthful…

  15. Paul Says:

I own the EVO, TP2 and a black berry tour for work. I have co workers that have thrown their palm hand sets against the wall. One wo insurance. Wouldn’t go near a palm, hp product. It’s not even a fair contest to compare that handset to the EVO. Under any circumstances.

  16. Kilari Says:

You guys should all just give in to the Palm Pre. It’s the best phone on the market. Listen to the Best of CES 2009 award, Phone Arenas 9.9/10, Phone News 2010 Phone of the Year, G4s 5 out of 5, Laptop Magazines March Madness Champion, and Laptop Mags Battle of the Champions champion vs the Droid Incredible. Don’t act like the Pre wasn’t a kick ass phone. Just because you haven’t REALLY tried it doesn’t make it ok to knock it.

  17. Ian Says:

who cares about palm. HP PWNS them now. Sense UI is sweet.

  18. Patrick Says:

    WOW!
okay so id like to say im happy for palm pre winning, but its sad to say that ive tried both webOS, and an android powered phone, and the pre is pretty boring, because of the fact that it doesnt have many apps. No lies, the pre is beautiful, but the EVO has android, and palm could step it up, because webOS has ALOT of potential, its just the fact that how long to we have to wait for palm to realize that and kick it into gear and give us some more webOS phone options, and some cooler apps…Sorry but any android phone wins, i like android alot. The EVO is all around the best phone ive ever had, wifi hotspot, (which doesnt come on the pre with sprint, which is what i have) 8mp camera, a front facing camera, a VERY LARGE screen, a kickstand, hdmi output…etc.

Over all, right now webOS sucks, compared to android market, i like webOS but they need to hurry up and catch up on the newest of technology like android.

  19. Don Guertin Says:

I have owned both the Motorola Droid and I quickly sold it and bought the Palm Pre Plus. I find the Palm a ton easier to operate and just all around nicer phone for me to use. You can have your Android powered phones. I am not looking for a million apps, I use it as a phone first then the apps. I find the Palm a breeze to use on the internet and love the slideout keyboard. I am an old retired guy and love my Palm…
