Dell Releases Inspiron Mini 12, Stretches Netbook Category

October 26th, 2008 by Joanna Stern

Dell has redefined the notebook. Today the company announced the Inspiron Mini 12, which like the Inspiron Mini 9, is targeted at those who want a very mobile Internet experience.  However, unlike any of the 8.9-inch or 10-inch netbooks on the market today, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is the first to incorporate a larger 12-inch screen. The keyboard, according to Dell, is 91.9 percent size.

Starting with the bad news first, the Inspiron Mini 12 is available initially only in Japan, but will launch online globally by late November with configurations starting between $500 and $600. The good news is that when finally available, $600 will buy you a seriously thin and light laptop. The Mini 12 will be available at launch running the Intel Atom processor (not the typical Intel Atom N270, but the Intel Atom Z520 or Z530) and Windows Vista. Windows XP and Dell’s tailored version of Ubuntu will be available later. We have complied the detailed specs below.

Stay tuned for a full review of the Dell Inspiron Mini 12. In the meantime check out our:

3 cell standard? WTF? anyone who doesn’t get the 6 cell upgrade is a fool!

On the plus side, Dell is starting to blur the line between Notebook and Netbook. This integration may lead to a higher level of personalization when buying a laptop.
