Dell Goes (Red) to Fight AIDS

redSure the iPod (PRODUCT) RED and Motorola (PRODUCT) RED cell phones are cool, but a (PRODUCT) RED laptop would be even cooler. For those that haven’t seen the GAP ads, a percentage of each (PRODUCT) RED product sold is given to The Global Fund, which helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. The RED initiative was started by U2 front man Bono.

Dell and Microsoft will announce later this week at Davos plans to sell (PRODUCT) RED computers, including the Dell XPS M1530 or XPS M1330 (both LAPTOP Editor’s Choice winners).

When you buy either laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED – starting at $1,149 for either laptop – Dell and Windows will make a total joint contribution of $50 directly to the Global Fund, which buys nearly 4 months of lifesaving antiretroviral medication.

All Dell (PRODUCT) RED PCs are powered by Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED, that include six unique desktop wallpapers, a screensaver, two innovative Windows Sidebar gadgets and a (RED)-themed Windows DreamScene. Does this mean Bono has to start using a Vista powered laptop? I am sure his pal Bill Gates hopes so!

It’s a nice thought, that in buying a laptop under this Dell/Microsoft/Red arrangement, you would actually be helping someone in need. How does that thought mesh with reality though? You always should look a gift horse in the mouth to see if it’s for real & this one, sadly, is not. Even AIDS experts now agree that donor money is better spent on basic health needs and clean water than on AIDS relief to help people in Africa (see the Associated Press 1/18/08 article entitled “Experts Call for Rethinking AIDS Money” at ).
‘Giving a patient medicine without food is like washing your hands and drying them in the dirt’. But worse yet, sometimes AIDS relief can actually DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD in Africa. See “Reason #3″ at ” So, you think you’re doing good in buying such a laptop, but are you? To know what’s really going on in the world and who needs to be helped you’ve got to get some real news, like news at:
