Deal of the Day: Lenovo IdeaPad Z470 with Core i5, 8GB RAM: $599

Dec 23, 2011 10:00 AM EDT by Oliver Renick, LAPTOP contributor

Yes, you read that right. Consider it a holiday gift from Lenovo, who has dropped the price for this solid rig from the previous low of $669. And that’s not to say this computer needs a super-low cost attached to it to be attractive – the IdeaPad Z470 is a good choice on its own. With an Intel Core i5 processor and a 8GB of memory, the Z470 is available now through a coupon at LogicBUY for an all-new low of $599.

The savings you’ll get on today’s deal isn’t the only catchy part of this computer, though. The atypical bright blue or pink exterior of the Z-series IdeaPad certainly means you’ll be identifiable in the crowd – but no worries, if you’re the quieter type, a solid black is also an option. The Z470′s Core i5 CPU, clocking at 2.40GHz, is geared for efficiency and smooth computing; rest assured this machine will conquer your daily tasks with ease, and with a 500GB hard drive, you’ll have extensive space for storing files, games, and programs.

Base specs: 2.30-GHz Intel Core  i5-2410M processor, Intel Integrated HD Graphics 3000, 8GB PC3 DDR3 RAM, 14-inch HD Glare with integrated camera and a 1366×768 pixel resolution, Integrated 2-megapixel camera, 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive, DVD Recordable (Dual Layer).

Get the Lenovo IdeaPad Z470 with Core i5 CPU and 8GB RAM for $599 through a deal at LogicBUY.

    Hi Oliver,

I’m shopping for a new laptop, and after a couple of days of searching, I’m back to square one, reluctant to commit to any one laptop. I just wanted to ask if you could give me any recommendations on any particular laptops, so I’d have some confidence in purchasing one. I’ve read plenty of the reviews on this site and found many great laptops, but in light of the oodles of Christmas/End-of-the-Year sales, I’ve been searching for laptops with more bang for the buck.

So, I need a 14-inch laptop to be used for constant multitasking (e.g. MS Word + Excel, multiple tabs on Chrome, Winamp) and a moderate amount of gaming (e.g. Starcraft 2). Goes without saying that I want to buy something that’ll be technologically relevant for at least the next two years. Style doesn’t really matter too much to me; functionality is much more important.

I posted on this page because I feel like the Lenovo IdeaPad Z470 might be a good candidate for my next rig. Specs seem on point, and I seemingly blindly trust Lenovo’s design (I once used my mom’s old IBM Thinkpad; easily my favorite laptop design). However, I am wary of the graphics card (Intel HD Integrated) provided in this $600 deal. I’ve been out of touch with technology lately, and I’m not positive if this GPU will suffice for games like Starcraft 2 (also, Dota 2 and Diablo 3 when they come out). Tragically, they don’t let you customize the laptop with a better GPU.

Considering this, I’ve also been eyeing the Acer Aspire Timeline X AS4830TG-6450, which features a switchable NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M card, at the same price point of $600. Geez, decisions. If you could help me out, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
