Contest Cash: New Google Site Rewards Users for Giving Advice

Google has launched a new social site called Prizes.org where anyone can participate in user-generated contests to win money.

The website is powered by Slide, a social gaming company Google bought last year. Registered users may create contests such as “Best Name for My New Business” and post a cash prize that typically ranges from $10 to $50.

Here’s a sampling of open contests:

Compile a shopping list for a doctor’s complete makeover. Prize: $40
Name a Halloween baby, sex unknown. (Surely you can beat Bella/Edward.) Prize: $20
Create a “Soul Tunes” playlist. Prize: $10
Suggest a weekend getaway to please parents and their four-year-old. Prize: $50

For now, contest makers are by invitation only, but will soon be open to all registered users. However, anyone can compete and vote.

Contest rules

Participants must register through their Twitter or Facebook accounts. Contest makers (or buyers, as they are called on Prizes.org) must purchase credits through PayPal to post a prize. One credit equals $1.

Buyers can create as many contests as they’d like using a simple form. Users may only submit one vote for each contest, but are allowed to modify their entry before the contest closes.

Contest winners are paid by Prizes via PayPal and must accrue a minimum of 50 credits before they can cash out.

Prize to the popular

The site’s community gives feedback, visitors vote and the entry with the most votes wins.

However, the contest maker can override the popular vote and choose the winner.
