In my experience, having used an Eee since late December, while it gets fairly “warm”, at no point has it gotten to be what I would call “hot”… Nothing like the bottom of my HP laptop can get, certainly. Never hot enough I would find it painful or even particularly uncomfortable even on my lap.

I use one of those ditigal thermometers that you can get at an auto parts supply or a lot of other places. It has a laser pointer also, so you can tell exactly where you are pointing it, and reads out on an LCD facing you. Very useful for lots of things.

This also happens with the ASUS EeePC, the manual warns: “Do not place on lap.”
So, unless you are looking for roasted chestnuts …
