Cisco Kills Flip Video Camera, Lays Off 550 People

April 12th, 2011 by Michael A. Prospero, LAPTOP Reviews Editor

Cisco, which purchased Pure Digital, the maker of the Flip camera, two years ago for $590 million, announced today that it was shutting down that business, and laying off 550 employees.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, though the company’s last camera, the Flip SlideHD–and the first device produced after Flip was acquired by Cisco–was seen as somewhat of a dud.

The layoffs are part of what Cisco, in a press release, said was part of a restructuring, which includes refocusing its home networking business (the Linksys line of routers), integrate Cisco umi into the company’s Business TelePresence product line, and seeing how it can integrate video technology into its Eos media solutions.

The company said that the layoffs would occur in the fourth quarter of 2011.
