Fanfoot, books in EPUB format will be compatible with many eReader devices, so you will be able to move your books to whatever device. I believe that the B&N eStore's books will be in EPUB. But if not, you will be able to read them on multiple devices.

I'd rather have an Apple Tablet, with an LCD screen that lasts 4 hours. Long enough for a plane ride. Support for things other than reading. Sure the battery life will be worse and the device will be more expensive. But it'll serve multple functions. For me the primary functions would be browsing the web and reading magazines, something you can't really do on the Kindle, at least not adequately.

The other issue I've got with the eBook category is the lock in. Say you bought a Kindle 2. Then you bought a bunch of books. You've only read some of them. Now you see the Nook and you think hey, I'd like to get that. But you'd have to buy all those books all over again.

The whole part where individual book stores are putting out their own books and the books will only work on their readers... big problem. Sure for trashy novels you'll only read once you won't care. But anything you might want to keep?

We need an audible.com equivalent. Somebody to sell eBooks for any platform. So I can move my books to the next device whoever it comes from. Either that or ditch the DRM.

Personally I like the smartphones. I don't like to carry around multiple devices. I have been reading ebooks for over three years. First on an HP PDA, then on my smartphone. I really like having the convenience of my books available on my smartphone. Anytime I have to wait for someone or have a few minutes to spare, when I cannot do anything else, I can pull out my phone and read. It is great.
