Black Friday Deal: $60 Off 7-inch Sylvania Android Tablet At Toys R Us

Nov 23, 2010 09:22 AM EDT by K. T. Bradford

In addition to the Archos 7 Home Tablet and the Archos 9 PCTablet already on offer, Black Friday shoppers at Toys R Us can score a 7-inch Android 2.1 tablet made by Sylvania for $60 off retail. It looks like this same tablet is sold by KMart for $179, so we think the Toys R Us Black Friday deal is likely to be $119. Is the tablet worth it?

The specs here are pretty typical for a low-cost Android slate. The Sylvania product page touts the Android OS (with periodic system updates!), Wi-Fi, and 3G dongle support. The “high-resolution” 7-inch screen’s resolution is a non-surprising 800 x 480, according to the KMart page. And it’s probably a resistive touchscreen. There is mention of an “APP Store”, which likely means a third-party app directory. The tablet runs on a 1-GHz ARM 11 processor, 256MB of RAM, and 2GB of internal storage. Ports include a microSD card slot (up to 16GB), 2 miniUSB ports, and a mini HDMI port, which is a welcome surprise. No word yet of an HDMI cable in the box, but we’re not holding our breath.

So, let’s be honest: we haven’t had great success with low-cost tablets of this type. And while we might turn to Sylvania for our lighting needs, they’re not exactly known for their prowess in the computing space. Often times tablets like this aren’t even worth the low price you pay for them, though $119 is very low. It could end up surprising us by being decent. However, if your holiday budget is tight and you want a tablet that’s sure to please, you may want to skip this Black Friday deal. However, if you love hacking and fiddling around, this will probably make for a decent, inexpensive Android toy. Thus, finding it on the shelves of Toys R Us is entirely appropriate.

Both the deal and the tablet aren’t up on the Toys R Us website yet, but you’ll see it in the Thanksgiving circular in local papers on Thursday. If you decide to grab one, let us know!
