Best Smartphones Under $50

Jun 8, 2011 03:16 PM EDT by Brian Oliver Bennett, LAPTOP Senior Writer

These days you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get a solid handset. In fact, you can nab a great phone for less than $50, and in some cases even for free by re-upping your service contract.

These aren’t watered-down feature phones, either. We picked devices running full-blown Android, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7, and Apple’s iOS, all of which let you install lots of apps for both work and play. This selection of devices from each of the major carriers gives you plenty of options that are long on features and short on price.

Apple iPhone 3GS (8GB)

You don’t have to pay $199 to get your hands on all of Apple’s 500,000-plus apps, iTunes music and movies, and the easiest-to-use smartphone interface. The iPhone 3GS for AT&T costs just $49, and it also features a good VGA camcorder, a 3-megapixel camera, and 8GB of memory. And with the latest iOS software, it’s a cinch to multitask.

You are joking right? Those smartphones are not under $50, they are under $2000 “maybe”, you’ve got to pay those 2-year contracts.

i agree. with the contracts etc, you might as well get a $250 phone so you can get the most out of whatever you’re paying

well the lg optimus t is $189.99 without an contract so i have to pay almost $200 dollars for a smartphone that is crazy

Are you kidding? I have the T-Mobile mytouch and it is by far the worst phone I’ve ever had. I would much rather have an old nokia or regular cell-phone than this. It is extremely laggy and pretty worthless as a smart phone.
