Averatec’s Dual Screen PT1400 Tablet Solves Presentation Problems
September 23rd, 2009 by Avram Piltch, LAPTOP Online Editorial Director
Ever sit across from someone and want to show them something — an image, a presentation, a Web page — on your notebook screen? Up until now, your options have been limited. You could either turn the notebook around so you could not see it, call the person over to stand next to you, or hook up a projector / second screen. Averatec’s new PT1400 tablet promises to change all that by providing you with a second rotatable touchscreen that you can use to control the action while its larger, primary display faces your audience.
The PT1400 has a 1.33 GHz Atom Z520 CPU, 802.11g Wi-Fi, 1GB of RAM, a 3,400 mAh battery, Windows XP tablet, and a choice of hard drive capacities ranging from 60 to 250GB. The primary display is 14-inches and carries a native resolution of 1366×768, while the secondary display, which pops out of a compartment at the top and can rotate 180 degrees, is 7-inches with a native resolution of 1024×600. The tablet also has a pop-out stand that lets it sit upright on a table, much like a picture frame.
Of course, it almost goes without saying that you don’t need to use the second screen just for giving presentations on the primary screen. It can also serve as a second monitor that lets you extend your work area and place programs like your IM client, twitter app, e-mail program, etc on a second desktop.
We spied the PT1400 sitting on a table in the technology showcase at the Intel Developer Forum. The unit on display was a preproduction model with some known touch issues so we were unable to evaluate the responsiveness of the screen. However, the device comes with a stylus and the screen uses resistive rather than capacitive touch, so we imagine that the finger won’t work as well as the pen.
See below for our hands-on video and some more images of the Averatec PT1400. Stay tuned for more information as we continue to follow this product.
