AT&T, Sprint, Time Warner, and Verizon Wireless Offer Free Calls and Texts to Japan

Those with friends and family in Japan will certainly be checking in following the earthquake that struck the country last Friday. Fortunately, many of the major carriers are making that easy: According to Engadget, AT&T is offering “billing relief” to customers calling Japan through March 31st. The billing relief applies to long-distance calls and text messages made by AT&T customers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Time Warner will also be waiving fees for calling and texting to Japan, with the offer extending till April 15th. The offer applies to the carrier’s Digital Phone customers and Cable Business Class Phone customers only.

In addition to providing its post-paid customers free calls and texts to Japan through April 10th, Verizon Wireless has set up a mobile giving program for donating $10 to the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and other charities via mobile phone. Text messaging to donate will not incur the normal fees.

Sprint is also offering free calls and texts to Japan through April 10th. While T-Mobile is not offering free calls or texts, the carriers is waiving text messaging fees for mobile donations.
