ASUS To Finally Lower Price on Original Eee PC 900

July 8th, 2008 by Joanna Stern

Our buddy Brad Linder at Liliputing spotted ASUS offering a $100 rebate on its $549 Eee PC 900s. This would bring the price of the Xandros Linux, 8.9-inch and Intel Celeron M powered mini-notebook down to $449. The rebate seems to be available right now on ZaReason.

This seems like a smart move on ASUS’ part since its 901 and 1000 series (and maybe even a 903, 904) sporting the latest Intel Atom processor will be the likely choices by consumers and retailers. Of course eventually, you will be able to get an MSI Wind for $499 and that will sport a larger 10-inch screen and the Atom processor. What this price drop doesn’t answer is if an Intel Atom Eee PC 900 is headed our way for $399.

Poll
Would you buy an Eee PC 900 for $449?

All prices will change by summer’s end. When the MSI Wind and Asus 1000 drop there will be at first some price gouging but then demand will level off. The real question is – when will Dell drop the E Slim+ and at what price. We’re all watching LaptopMag for it’s review….hope to see soon before I make my final choise and grab Wind.

The Wind is a great deal, but 10″ takes it out of the market for me.

I want small small small! The tiny form factor is what sells these devices for me. I want to be able to chuck it in any bag. The 901 is already pushing it, but it’s definitely the one I’m looking at right now.

If only the price was better…

Tempting, I need to check out the Wind.

hey my family got two 900 for £200 each, the price was dropped by some uk suppliers over the battery issue. they’re so small and pearly white! seems a ten inch is kinda defeating the point of mini notebook computers, it’s nice to have a range i guess. what really gets me is why constantly release slightly different versions, like saturation boosts the market? surely better to put more effort into fewer netbooks! anyway no real complaint, this is such a comprehensive and sweet machine at a great price, once i get a better battery i probably won’t be budging for a long time!
