ASUS Lowering Eee PC Prices To Keep Up

Sep 9, 2008 03:20 PM EDT by Joanna Stern

ASUS might have pioneered the netbook craze, but now its got to keep up with the competition in innovation and price. Spotted by our friend Brad  Linder at Liliputing yesterday was a more than $100 price drop of the Eee PC 1000H. Originally listed at $650, it looks like you can pick up a 1000H for $445 at Amazon.com and $449 at Mwave. That is a pretty decent deal, however the Lenovo S10 will be priced at a competitive $429. Also spotted yesterday was a price decrease for the Eee PC 901. The Eee PC 901, which has been listed for $599, is now priced at $499 at Amazon.com. It has also been spotted for $448 at Walmart.  However, that is still a bit of money compared to the Dell Insprion Mini 9 and the Acer Aspire one which are available for as low as  $399 running WIndows XP. Undoubtedly, ASUS will have to begin to think about drastically lowering the price on its 8.9-inch and 10-inch netbooks if it wants to maintain its lead over other notebook manufacters now in the mini-notebook game. With recent news of Toshiba (reported just today by JKOntheRun), Fujitsu and Samsung entering the market the compeition will only be getting more fierce.

That Amazon link doesn’t send you to a $445 quoted price–it’s $505. The Mwave link gives the $449 price.

    sam,
the prices fluctuate within the day…i don’t see the lenovo is that competitive at $429 cause for $20 more, you get a 6 cell battery instead of a 3 cell.

The Asus has an 80 gig hd, and b/g/n wifi with the six cell too. It’s a close call, but the /n wifi as opposed to the b/g wifi of MSI Wind, makes me put the 1000H over the MSI Wind, especially at this price.

Costco sells the eeepc 1000h for $449. online

Re Amazon – if you look at the lower right side, it shows Amazon selling it for $449 with free shipping.

The Best Buy store in Culver City CA had a 1000H on display last night for $379. Oddly enough, it had no webcam installed; just a filler plate in the bevel. But for a Windows XP netbook with these specs, the price is, I think, intriguing.

The only thing this model has over it’s main competitor, the Acer, is integrated bluetooth. It is a feature I want, but at a $100 premium? I don’t think so.
