ASUS EeeTop Gets Touchscreen, Easy Mode for XP and Caught on Camera
October 16th, 2008 by Joanna Stern
Never before have I wished to be in Germany more than today. At ASUS’s Eee PC S101 unveiling in Hamburg today our friend Sascha from EeePCNews.de caught glimpse of the ASUS EeeTop. The EeeTop is an All-in-One with a touchscreen (think HP TouchSmart) that runs Windows XP. But what is most interesting is the ASUS Easy Mode Skin that is running on top of its Windows XP. ASUS’ Xandros Linux OS is a perfect fit for those who want a simple interface to navigate the Web and perform basic tasks with its preinstalled apps. So why not put that same interface on a Windows machine? We sure know that Vista could use that mode. The EeeTop does just that with an Easy Mode on top of the familiar OS for children and newbies. Check out Sascha’s hands-on video (the second one is in English) to see it in action. The interface looks just like Xandros’ with different tabs that have shortcuts to your favorite Web sites and tools.

As you can see in the video, the screen seems pretty responsive to Sascha’s finger and the whole experience reminds us of the HP TouchSmart. No word yet on the pricing on the EeeTop or if it will ever come to the U.S.

A year ago I had not even heard of the Eee. But since then I have progressed thru models 701, 900, 901 (all with Linux), and a 901 XP. A year ago good cheap laptops did not exist – now they do.
So happy birthday Eee indeed !

I love my Little monster eee pc 701 and I carry it with me everyday. I use it for far more than just browsing the net. It practically meets my needs hence I don’t need a laptop. I also have a desktop for more demanding stuff like graphic works, etc. but for my normal day to day stuff, the 701 works fine. Am not so old that I can’t see stuff in the 7″ screen but am not so young that I don’t really have any responsibilities and use my 701 as a toy. I am a young Councilor of a Local Government Unit in my country and have a Law degree. Eee pc’s work.
