After over a month with the 1000HE, I find myself going back to my Aspire One. The keyboard is nearly impossible to type on. The right shift key is too narrow, causing me to hit the adjacent up arrow key over half the time. Also, for a netbook this device is almost as heavy as a regular notebook.

On the plus side, EEEUbuntu installed with no troubles and seems very stable.

John,

I'm curious. With all the power-saving features enabled, how much extra battery life do you get after installing a solid state drive on your Eee 1000 HE?

I own one of these, and it's great. A bit jerky with full screen Hulu videos at times, but livable.

Note, however, that the 667 Bus speed on this netbook is ONLY on the CPU side. The memory bus is STILL LIMITED TO 533 MHz! That's because of the 945GSE chipset that's used in this version. It's really not that big a deal, but it's a fact nonetheless.

You can definitely boot from an external USB device. I bought mine with a 2 Gb memory DIMM to replace the internal 1 Gb of RAM, an external USB CD/DVD drive (a tiny thing barely the size of a CD jewel case), and a Corsair 128 Gb SSD. When everything arrived, I popped open the bottom of the unit, swapped DIMM modules and swapped out the SATA hard drive for the SATA SSD drive. Buttoned everything up, plugged in the USB DVD drive, and put in the restore DVD. Turned it on, and with almost no other interaction on my part, it booted from the external DVD, found the blank SSD, partitioned it, formatted it, loaded all the standard software onto it. I then removed the restore DVD from the drive, restarted the netbook, and it booted from the SSD just like it had previously booted from the hard drive (except faster).

The Corsair SSD is the best value I have found so far in terms of price, storage size, and high performance. And the total silence during disk access is eerie. I've already managed to accidentally drop the netbook about 3 feet (one meter) onto a carpeeted floor, and was glad that the mechanical hard drive was already swapped out for the (shockproof) SSD.

I really like this little guy, for those times when it is appropriate. I still have and love my huge HP Pavillion ZD8000 (desktop computer in a 17" notebook disguise) when I want maximum processing power and/or maximum screen size in a portable computer, and I still use my Samsung Instinct touchscreen cellphone (vaguely resembles an Apple iPhone) for net browsing with a device that fits in my pocket, but the size and weight of the Asus eee PC-1000HE falls in a much sweeter spot for most casual net surfing and mobile computing. I love it and won't give it up!
