Are T-Mobile and HTC Working on an Android Netbook?

May 6th, 2009 by Todd Haselton

tmoanhtcRumors are beginning to swirl that T-Mobile may be working with HTC on an Android-powered netbook with 3G connectivity. While the rumor makes a little sense, given that the two companies have worked together on the G1 which uses Google’s Android operating system, it’s strictly based upon an anonymous tip given to TMotoday.com.

The site says the netbook could appear before the end of this year.

While Android could be a viable option on a cheap, low-powered netbook, in what we’ve seen so far, the operating system would need some tweaks to make it netbook-ready. For now, its icons and entire menu system seem much friendlier for touch-based handsets with smaller screens, as opposed to 7-to-12-inch displays that require more mouse and keyboard interaction.

The biggest question I have is, what’s so attractive about Android on a netbook? Sure there’s an application store, but there’s no shortage of apps for Linux in general. And consumers still aren’t familiar with it, so it seems like only hardcore Android junkies would jump onboard. Would you rather have Android or a more common flavor of Linux on a netbook? I’m still on the XP bandwagon.
