TripIt has earned its Appscar for Best Travel App, but today we’re onto Utilities. They help keep your phone in tip-top shape so it can run like it should. So which of these nominees (Advanced Task Killer, Astro File Manager, Better Keyboard, MySettings, and Speedtest.net Mobile Speed Test) is your favorite? You’ll just have to vote to tell us.
Advanced Task Killer: It’s pretty simple. Because some apps start up when you turn your Android phone on—or because they check for updates every so often—some apps may be running even when you don’t need them. ATK, or Advanced Task Killer, simply stops apps from running. You can uncheck the apps that you want to allow to run, and “kill” other apps.
Astro File Manager: Make your Android phone work harder with this easy-to-use file organizer. This Metago app lets you manage files on your SD card, back up applications, manage those applications running, send files as attachments in your e-mail, view thumbnails and images in your directory, and browse compressed ZIP and Tar files. The $3.99 pro version is ad-free.
Better Keyboard: Because not everyone loves SWYPE or the stock Android keyboard, the aptly named Better Keyboard is a great alternative option. For $2.99, you’ll be typing away to your heart’s content in either the full QWERTY, compact QWERTY, or T9 format. You can change the keyboard’s font and language. There’s even a smart/auto dictionary and contact dictionary option.
MySettings: Don’t dig through menus and home screens, put all your Android phone’s settings in one place with MySettings. This free app from JQSoft gives you quick access to your ringer mode, brightness, battery info, Wi-Fi, GPS location, Bluetooth, auto sync, auto rotate, unlock pattern, screen timeout, airplane mode, network mode, and more.
Speedtest.net Mobile Speed Test: Curious how well your network is performing in terms of bandwidth? This is the app for checking it out, available for free for iOS and Android devices. The website can check your ISP, while the mobile app will analyze how well your provider does at bringing you the web.
The poll is open from now until Tuesday, February 22 at 9:00 a.m. Did we forget someone? Feel free to add write-ins in the comments below. Then tune in Wednesday for the Best Productivity App category.
