Apps That Work With The Entourage Edge
March 4th, 2010 by K. T. Bradford
When you read our review of the Entourage Edge earlier (you did read it, right? Of course you did) you may have noticed a few extra app icons on the homescreen that don’t appear in the official shots. The majority of those apps I added myself — click here to see how — and it’s been an interesting journey to see which of my favorite apps work on a 10-inch screen. Here’s a list of the 6 best apps I’ve successfully installed and used so far:
- Dolphin Browser — Yep, our favorite browser does just fine on the Edge, though the multitouch thing doesn’t work.
- Facebook — This looks so much better on a netbook-sized screen.
- Twidroid — Same here. I don’t even bother going to the website, anymore.
- NewsRob — This is my favorite RSS reading app and it scales perfectly for the Edge.
- Shazam — Scales well and utilizes the Edge’s excellent internal mic to identify music.
- Ultimate Stopwatch — I don’t have as much use for this on the Edge as I do on my Droid, but it’s a favorite so I installed. Works perfectly and scales well enough.
The following apps installed and sort of work, but with caveats.
- SugarSync — This app scales all right, and I was able to download documents from the cloud-based storage., However, I couldn’t get the app to upload nor would it stream music as it does on my Droid. Still, it’s useful for pulling docs I need.
- GDocs Notepad — This app syncs with Google Docs as it should, but the window itself does not scale. So it ends up in a little 3.5-inch box at the top of the screen. Still, it does work.
- Photoshop.com Mobile — Same problem here: works just fine, but doesn’t scale to fit the screen.
- eBuddy — Once more with feeling: no scaling.
The list above represents about 75% of the apps I’ve attempted to install and use on the Edge so far. There were some that just wouldn’t install at all and others that refused to work. Here’s hoping that more app developers put out scalable versions that work on tablets in the near future.
Any Edge owners out there experimenting with apps? Which ones have you tried and liked?

Thanks for the tips.
I found a remote desktop client app (RDP) that runs in a small screen. I didn’t try past that as it’s too small. (http://www.androidtapp.com/tag/remote-desktop-client/). Same for the “OpenIntents NewsReader.”
The Dolphin Browser is superb! The NewsRob is nice, too, but MP3 streams attached to podcasts don’t download on the eDGe (at least not the CBC Radio podcasts). The WeatherBug widgets work great, too.

Here are some additional apps, this time from SlideMe.org (a non-Google market place with a lot of free apps, all of which seem compatible):
AndSudoku 1.0.2 – small window, but works great
Yxflash 1.2.9 – full screen, but need to find a FLV file to play
FBReaderJ -.5.27 – full screen, but requires books in a specific folder – will have to play with this one. Ultimately, as with Aldiko, the LCD screen is not pleasant as a reader.
asMineSweeper 3.1.0 – full screen, super AWESOME! You’ve got to put this on the default distribution for the eDGe!
ChessWalk 1.1 – small window, but works great. Includes online play against human players in additional to player-vs-computer.
I also downloaded and tried DroidPlayer Live 2.0.5. This is a gorgeous app that runs full size. However, most of the streams are MPEG audio and won’t actually play. It does support m3u/pls radio station streams, though, which would be nice if the actual MPEG audo would play.

Swift Twitter is full screen and works very well. I haven’t tried Twitdroid, but I’m really happy with Swift.

so, im thinking about buying one of these for college. and i was wondering about the apps. i watched a video and it said that there was no app store, but i keep reading these and see that there is some way to put more on there than with they come. i read on one that if you have an android smartphone, you can transfer apps to the EE, but i got rid of my smartphone a few months ago. im curious as to how this works.
thanks.
