Apple Tablet Rumor: Two Sizes Now
August 19th, 2009 by K. T. Bradford
It’s Apple tablet rumor time again! This time there are some fresh new twists. In an article at Businessweek, Richard Doherty — director at market researcher Envisioneering Group — claims that Apple is developing two tablets: a “larger” one (which I assume corresponds to the 10-inches people have been floating for weeks) and a 6-inch model “that resembles a large-sized iPod.” Wait, what? I thought the 10-inch one would be a larger iPod? Okay, now I’m officially as annoyed as everyone else with the rumors and conjectures. …but I’m still excited. Onward. Now the prediction is that the 6-inch tablet is going to cost between $600 and $700, which is a big let down for me. I’m willing to pay that much for a larger tablet, but not for a smaller device that’s mainly meant for gaming and eBooks. Not that I don’t think others will – millions bought the iPhone, right? But as Josh pointed out in our Apple tablet fight, the iPhone is a phone and it fits neatly in a pocket. I’m thinking a 6-inch tablet… won’t. The article concludes by pointing out the biggest hurdle for any tablet coming on the market: data input. Without a traditional keyboard the tablet is going to have to offer something special on the software side to make up for it. Though I am sure that wireless keyboards will pop up almost as soon as the tablet itself, there’s still the question of input on the go in the tablet’s native mode. I’m optimistic, though, because I’m sure Apple realizes this, too. Hat Tip: SlashGear via GottaBeMobile Photo Credit: Photo Giddy on Flickr
