Apple Showcases HTML5 Demos, But They Only Work In Safari…

Apple and Adobe have already traded lots of blows over the iPad choosing HTML5 instead of Flash, but in between the infighting, most people are probably still wondering: what exactly can HTML5 do?

Last week, Apple threw up a HTML5 section on its site, which features six demos that showcase various features built into HTML5. Besides demos which feature HTML5’s ability to easily embed audio and video, the other examples let users manipulate text and play around with photo galleries and PowerPoint-style transitions.

The demos are pretty cool to play with, and for Apple’s part, it’s certainly worthwhile to actually let users see HTML5 in action – most users are familiar with HTML5 thanks to the fight between Apple and Adobe, but the standard’s relatively low adoption rate means that few people actually know what it does.

The demo page is Safari-only, though – as John Gruber over at Daring Fireball points out, HTML5 compatibility certainly exists on other browsers, but making a site that’s ostensibly supposed to promote a new web standard exclusive to Safari seems like it’s missing the point.
