Apple Netbook Rumors Abound
December 16th, 2008 by K. T. Bradford
I’ve seen it mentioned a few times that there’s a rumor that Apple plans to unveil a netbook at the next Macworld (based on analyst speculation). I was just saying yesterday that Apple should jump on this market before the MSI Wind becomes the default MacBook nano (not that Apple would definitely name a netbook that). I definitely hope that this rumor ends up being true.
I don’t use a Mac, but it just seems like if Apple did decide to enter this category they would make something amazing, drool-worthy… and twice as expensive. But, if they can get it down to $500 - $600 they may have a shot at capturing an even wider audience. I don’t want to switch to OS X for my regular computing, but for a netbook? Heck yeah. I went for Linux, didn’t I?
For now all we can do is speculate and wait.
19 days to go.

Apple Netbook? I’ll throw away my Mac Mini if that happens.

So if this comes true, Jobs was just fibbing when he said Apple had no need to produce a netbook as they already had the iPhone / Touch, and those were good enough? Jobs being disingenuous? Say it isn’t so!
Then again, maybe the marketing people have finally smacked some sense into his head - though he’ll likely defeat some of the point by overpricing it at $700 or more…
There would be the real danger that a, say, $500 Apple netbook with a fully featured OS (even a ‘Lite’ version of OS X) would completely gut Apple’s traditional overpriced notebook market. But, on the other hand, such a device would almost certainly encourage a lot of consumers to reconsider the idea of buying a netbook running the obsolete XP or waiting to see what Win7 has to offer in favour of a device with a current OS in Mac packaging.
But the incredible growth of the netbook market (often surpassing traditional notebooks by the same manufacturers) cannot be ignored, even by The Smug B*stard from Cupertino or Apple’s shareholders.
