Apple Announces FaceTime For Mac; Works With iPhone and iPod Touch
October 20th, 2010 by K. T. Bradford
In what was was probably the shortest and simplest demo of the Back to the Mac event, Steve Jobs introduced FaceTime for the Mac. Modeled on the app for iPhone 4, the desktop/notebook version will work with all Apple devices that have this functionality.
Making calls is just as simple as on iOS — choose a contact and connect. Jobs demoed a call between a MacBook and an iPhone 4. The call quality was decent, though Phil Schiller sounded like he was speaking from the bottom of a cave. Video also looked good and the orientation of the video automatically switches if the user calling from anĀ iPhone or iPod switches the orientation of their phone from horizontal to vertical and vice versa.
FaceTime for Mac Beta is available now at Apple.com. To see it in action, check out our hands-on video below.
